My office wears many hats. It is home to all of my yarn and needles, my sewing machine and fabric, receipts, makeup collection, and a ton of random craft supplies. I would have to say this project was only partially successful since I didn’t really set aside enough time to really work on it. I would have liked to gets some more organizers for my drawers but such is life. I will consider it a work in progress.
So what I did to help get it somewhat under control.
1. A letter sorter doubled as storage for my eye shadow palettes. I got some acrylic organizers for my face and eye products. I found them at Marshall’s and one at Ross while I was in North Carolina.
3. Now the dreaded receipts, I really wanted to shred and get rid of everything that was over a year old. I did keep any major purchase receipts, home improvement receipts, and any condo specific documents. I think I did pretty well getting rid of a lot. I shredded and recycled what I could.
4. After my Nana passed a few years ago my cousins and Aunt helped my other Aunt Karen go through her knitting items and we each got to take some home. I was the only one who was a major knitter while the others crochet so I go a majority of the needles. I donated some to the local Council on Aging but kept a lot too. I was storing them in a pretty box, but wanted a few on display. I placed them in a nice yellow pitcher and held them in place with spare fabric. I also sorted the yarns by type and placed in fabric bins that are in my bookcase, I just need to label them, my handwriting is messy so I want to print them.
While I still have some drawers to go through I think this was a really good start. Now I just need to make some projects so I can really downsize my yarn and fabric stash.
Do you have a room in your house you want to organize?
Do you have any favorite tools for organizing?
Biana says
Getting organized is one of my favorite things in the world!!! So happy you were able to get some organization into your office! I love the idea of a letter opener for your palettes, that’s seriously better than how I store mine right now!!
Kerry says
It is so hard to do in that one room, because it is constantly cycling out materials. I love how it keeps it within reach and you don’t have to move them all to get to one.
kathy_ vodka and soda says
holy crap i’m here. i feel like i fell off the face of the earth because work has been so incredibly brutal!!
i love all this organizing jazz all up in my face this morning. you did an awesome job 🙂
Kerry says
Yeah! Glad you are back! I need to do more, but it is a good start!
Linda sheridan says
Excellent start. Your office is a workshop, too! Lovely that you knit and sew!
Love , SMD’s Momma
Kerry says
Yes, it serves as a hub for all things crafty. I wish I spent more time doing knitting and sewing, but I tend to cycle between them and reading. Reading usually wins! 😉
Nadine says
I love the make up organizers you got!!!! I already have some, but every time I go to TJ Maxx I just have to look at them for some reason!? I think to myself hmmmm just one more? Haha! Good job on all the organizing!!! My office area is like yours, so many different hats that it takes more than a month to get it all together!
Kerry says
They are so cute and really help put everything together. It is at least clean but it could use a little more purging for sure!
Ellesees.blogspot.com says
my receipts need to be organized. it’s awful! i have my palettes in a letter sorter too.
Kerry says
Great minds think alike!! It was a mound I kept trying to stuff into a hanging file and it was collapsing on itself. I really should toss them more frequently.
Kate says
You definitely aren’t lacking in crafting materials!
Kerry says
Haha! For sure, never going to run out!
Bri @ My Life As... says
Congrats on the organizing! You did a great job!
Kerry says
Thank you. It is still a work in progress, but it is progress! 🙂
Helene says
this makes me want to go through some of my drawers right now! I really could use some organization
Kerry says
It always makes me feel better when I do it, though I have a hard time just setting aside time to do it.
kristen says
wow, you got so much done! the fabric organisation is brilliant, and i love your nana’s needles on display.
Kerry says
Thanks! I love that I can see the fabrics now, so it will be easier to grab some for little projects. It makes me feel better knowing her needles will continue to make knitted items. She was such an avid knitter.
SMD @ Life According to Steph says
Great job!!! I love love love the needles in the pitcher. That’s fabulous.
Kerry says
Thank you. It’s great because I can see the sizes easily, but then when I do my makeup in the morning it’s in my eyesight. I take a moment then to remember her which is nice.
Amanda says
What a good idea for the knitting needles/fabric display!
My receipts are out.of.control. I throw them in my purse, then I throw them in the junk “closet.” Yeah, that’s right… not just a drawer, an entire CLOSET. *shakes head*
Kerry says
Haha! A closet! I tend to not throw the stupid ones out and I need to. The others I usually keep in case of returns but I almost never return anything. Start shredding girl!
Danae D says
this just inspired me to go organize! I try and stay on top of it but ya know things happen 😉
Kerry says
I feel you on that one, things always happen!
Kelli says
Good job even getting started, I definitely want to get organized but it will be after the holidays when life settles down. There is so much going on from the beginning of December through the 2nd week in January for me I don’t have time or energy to organize!
Kerry says
It is hard around the holidays and I don’t know if I will ever attempt it again this time of year! Haha! Keep your sanity and wait! 😉
chelsea says
I’m trying my best to get organized before Christmas..it’s hard, but so worth it!
Kerry says
It really helps so you aren’t wasting time trying to find things.
Meg says
I am so awful at organization. Luckily, Mike takes care of all receipts and important papers, or I would probably just say “screw it” and throw everything away haha!
Kerry says
I really think receipts are my worst offender. That is awesome that Mike takes care of them.
Jana @ Jana Says says
My office, or my part of the office, is next on my list of things to organize. My half of the room is a disaster and I figure if I can get it organized, it’ll help with my goal of simplifying my blogging projects and tasks.
Your organizing tasks look great! I really love the pitcher with the knitting needles. Such a great, creative idea.
Kerry says
Yes, having a clean place to write can make it easier to get motivated too. Thank you, it is my favorite part of the room.
Emily says
It’s always fun decluttering and organizing. Just finding the time to do it.
Kerry says
Finding the time is the hardest part!
Mariah-Food, Booze, & Baggage says
Looks like you did a great job on your organizational goals! Like what you did with your fabric.
Kerry says
Thank you! It got the ball rolling for sure.
Tricia Coniglio says
I hate the act of organizing but I love the end product. I like that you used the letter organizer for your makeup – great use of space.
I grew up in a house where one of the mottos were “everything has its place”. Which meant I learned at an early age how to use a file folder for the receipts. I cannot imagine having to sort through those! I don’t even like shredding after the 7 yr mark is up.
Kerry says
I do love when it is organized. Oh I use a file folder but it was busting at the seams!!! I either need to stop shopping or throw some of the receipts out earlier. You know, like those target receipts. 😉
Amber says
I need to organize my garage. It’s pretty scary in there.
Kerry says
That is a great idea! A few pegboards, or some cabinets to organize everything could really help.
C.Lem (creativeclementine) says
I WISH I could relate to the statement above about a place for everything and everything in its place. That’s basically my life goal. I am in a constant state of creating a place for everything, but I keep adding to the “everything” hehe.
The receipt organization is something I can relate to. I wish I took before and after pictures of my progress! Maybe I’d feel a bigger sense of accomplishment with the challenge. As of now I feel like organizing stuff just made more messes! (THAT will never make it onto instagram 😉 )
Kerry says
Haha! I am the same way, once one project is done I start two more! The before pictures really help to see how much you got done.
Stephanie says
Wow, huge undertaking. You got a lot done, you should proud! Those receipts especially, I totally would have freaked out and quit. I tend not to keep any receipts – whoops 🙁
Kerry says
Thanks! I think I really need to keep less of them or at least shred them after 3 months.
Jayda says
This looks awesome! I almost never organize, but I’ve cleaned out a few spaces in my house lately, and it’s been totally worth it. Being organized is so freeing!
Kerry says
Being organized feels so much better. It really makes it easier to find everything.
Krystal R. says
Totes impressed girlfriend! You go!
Kerry says
Thank you. It feels so much better to be organized.
Mree says
I so need to organize my receipts, they get out of control so fast!!
Kerry says
I keep telling myself I need to shop less, it doesn’t work though! 😉
Stacia says
I love the way you are displaying your knitting needles. Both pretty and easy to use. Great job conquering your space!
Kerry says
Thank you. It provides a visual reminder of my Nana too and our shared hobby which is nice. Thank you.
Sharon says
Such a smart idea to use the letter sorter! I have my daily makeup in a makeup bag but my other makeup is all over the place. Really need to organize it!
-Sharon
Kerry says
Mine was dumped in a drawer and was always so hard to find everything. Such a time saver.
Kateri Von Steal says
Organizing feels so good!
And you’re right – there are so many other rooms that I (personally) want to tackle. But, it was such a good start!
Kerry says
Once you are done with one room, the next room is waiting. It is never ending but feels so good.
Melanie @ Ribbons and Rotor Blades says
I need and want to organize my crafts! Being a teacher pre-marriage and loving to scrapbook, I have tons of craft things lying around. But it’s all in giant storage containers. I want to buy some white organizing shelves and drawers and create a mini-craft area in our spare bedroom! HEY! That’s what I’ll ask “Santa” for! Thanks for the idea!!!
Kerry says
That is a great idea! I got a drawer unit from Ikea that is perfect for craft supplies that really helps control some of the craft supplies. I think that is a great Christmas gift idea. I use them so much more when I can see them.
Maddie says
I need to get my office and guest room organized. I want to go to container store this weekend to get some stuff to organize my pantry too!
Kerry says
The container store is the holy grail of organizing. Love that place. Hope you find some great organizing items.
