Risk It | Book Tour | Review | Giveaway

Happy Hump Day!! If you caught my post from yesterday you know I read a lot, daily. I love the opportunity to read advanced copies of books, and to read more from an author I enjoyed. Today I am sharing the book Risk It by Jennifer Chance.

The publisher was also kind enough to host a giveaway for Flirt and Loveswept mugs and multiple eBooks. Checkout the giveaway at the end of the post. If you like happily ever after stories with a harder edge this is a book for you.

My review:

The is nothing Dani likes better than pulling the ultimate con, she meets Rand Sterling Winston IV during a art exhibit convincing him to buy a painting three times its worth. She must hand deliver it though and he proposes a no strings attached affair. Dani’s hasn’t always had the easiest life and when her foster brother is in trouble she always jumps in to help. Rand is from a privelaged background but even he has his secrets. They may just be able to heal each other.

Excerpt:

“I really must be going.” Dani turned, offering a smile. She had a clear run at the door, and she gestured to the painting. “I hope you enjoy it.”

“Let me get you a receipt.”

“That’s not—”

“I insist.” Rand turned to his desk, swiveling the notepad around and tearing free a loose sheet. He jotted down a quick note of thanks, signed and dated it. Dani had followed him to the desk.

“Truly, it isn’t necessary, Mr. Winston,” she said as he handed it to her. She opened her purse, and he heard the telltale buzz of her silenced phone. She didn’t even look at it, but the effect it had on her was instantaneous, her artfully easy manner now going tight as a drum.

“Necessary,” he mused, and something in his voice made her glance up sharply. The shiver of control it took for her to not step back from him was obvious, but Rand wasn’t about to let her get away a second time. “And do you always do only what is necessary?”

“Saves time,” she said again. But her eyes were on his lips, and he felt the attraction between them like a living thing. He lifted a hand, and while her body didn’t flinch, her eyes did.

Another surge of emotion blazed through him, this one hotter, less controlled. He didn’t understand that flinch of hers, the reflex she could not quite quell. But he knew the reaction wasn’t about him, and he wanted her to only think of him in this moment—to have the same intensity of emotion, the same nerves, the same trepidation, even a little fear. He didn’t mind her fearing him. He expected it. But the nature of that fear was what intrigued him.

“Ah, fuck it,” Dani said, startling him again. She stepped into his body, reaching up to draw his head toward hers. “I don’t have all goddamned night.”

She kissed him, hard, and the spears of desire touched together at their tips, igniting Rand with need. Still, he didn’t move forward, just let Dani pull him closer in, sensing that the deepening of the kiss was something she hadn’t planned for. His hands went naturally to her waist, and felt large against the curve of her hips, anchoring her almost possessively. She pulled away—or tried to, her body leaning back even as he kept her still and tight. Her smile was satisfied against his lips, and understanding lit through him. She’d won, he realized. By controlling the kiss between them, by taking the initiative and coming to him, instead of waiting for him to come to her, she had won.

“Was that what you wanted, Miss Michaels?” he asked, and he deliberately kept the teasing challenge in his voice.

She drew in a sharp breath, but didn’t take the bait. “Everything I could have hoped for,” she said, leaning back with a smug grin.

He lifted his brows. “Did I just experience sexual harassment?”

Dani’s smile flashed a little more broadly now. “I do apologize, sir. I was just so swept away.”

“Hmm.” He eyed her. “You didn’t seem terribly swept away. I must be losing my touch. Perhaps I should try again.”

“No, no. That won’t be necessary,” Dani’s words were a little too quick, a little too breathless, and she seemed to know it. She licked her lips, then colored at that action as well. “If we’re finished here, I’ll be on my way.”

“But we’re not finished here.” Rand could feel the heat radiating off her, liquid with intensity, and he dipped his head lower. “And you don’t strike me as someone who leaves the game before it’s done.”

“And yet I really need to be going.”

“You can leave at any time, Miss Michaels.” And it was true. He’d dropped his hands from her hips and she just stood there now in the lee of his body, her eyes fixed on his. Her breathing was unsteady, and a pulse jumped just below her jaw, her breasts rising and falling beneath the narrow slit of her neckline. Her reaction to him was undeniable, and Rand’s resulting determination was direct and absolute. Dani Michaels was going to be his. He could see his hands moving over her body, trapping those breasts in his hands, squeezing them, his fingers teasing the tender nipples until she stood on tiptoe, her mouth slack with need for him, her skin shimmering with heat.

He hovered over her lips, waiting for her to break, and Dani stood frozen before him. He was letting her make the final call, but there was no way anyone would believe she was winning this round.

Not by a long shot.

“Shall I kiss you again?” Rand brushed his lips against hers and they opened on a sigh. He curved his mouth into a hard smile. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

May Books I’ve Read

My favorite day of the month is here…show us your books. I get so many book recommendations to add to my ever growing list of books to read. It’s basically a book lovers Utopia. I had a good mix of books this month. I also want to tell you to check back tomorrow because I have another book review with excerpt and a giveaway. So on to what I read this past month…

My rating system:
Five Stars: Blew me away, made me want to stay up till 3am to finish, would read again and again or I didn’t find anything I would want to change.
Four Stars: Really good book, fast paced or thought provoking, but may have dragged a bit or left something unresolved
Three Stars: Okay, didn’t thrill me but didn’t disappoint me either.
Two Stars: I almost didn’t finish, it may have irritated or offended me in some way.

*Disclosure: All books this month happened to be provided from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am always going to be honest in how I like the books, good or bad.

Five Stars

  5 Stars

Once Pure – MMA Gym Owner Killian O’Brien lost his chance with Sophia Tres Santos when he was younger but he is determined to try again. Sophia is helping Killian re-build his website and help build his business. Their chemistry is undeniable, for an except and my full review click here.

Inside The O’Briens – I might be a little biased, since this book takes place in a neighborhood in Boston. Joe O’Brien is a tough cop in the city of Boston, a veteran of the force for over 20 years. He begins to experience involuntary movements, unclear thinking, and fits of rage. After his wife pushes him to get checked out he discovers he has a  neurodegenerative disease called Huntington’s disease, and there is no cure. It is also a disease that gives children a 50/50 change of inheriting from their parents, Joe has to tell his 4 children. Each of his kids while in their 20’s struggle to come to the decision to get tested and what it might mean to them. Is the knowing better than not knowing, and how would you embrace life if you had the disease. It also takes you on Joe’s journey of struggling through the disease that ultimately takes his identity, his job and his pride from him. So beautifully written, heartbreaking, but so powerful.

four stars

 4 Stars

Breath of Scandal  – This book was actually originally published in 1991 but I didn’t feel it was dated, aside from a few stereotypes. This book does have really heavy subject matter. Jade claws her way back to the road determined to get her revenge, in her being run by one family. The sheriff is the father of one of the accusers, her own mother doesn’t stand by her. She moves away to go to college and plan her revenge. She hires Dillon a man on his own road to redemption when she comes back to town to take down everyone involved in destroying her childhood.

Flipped – Holly and Dan meet when Holly breaks into the house that she believes is hers, but Dan stole out from under her. Holly had dreams of restoring the historical home for her and her daughter. Dan is also the brother of one of her best friends, Johnnie, so they can’t get away from each other. Holly is hoping that if she can’t restore the house herself, she can convince Dan to restore the house the way she envisioned it. Great chemistry, cute story and I am excited to read the rest of the series.

Before It’s Too Late – DI Jackman is tasked with finding the student who goes missing Min Li. She just had a fight with her boyfriend, so he is immediately a suspect. When another student goes missing the heat is on to find them. You get to hear Min’s side of the story as she describes being buried alive. I didn’t understand the back story of Jackman’s wife but maybe that is explained in further books, it just seemed to be unnecessary, otherwise great story, loved the back and forth from Min’s telling and Jackman’s.

 three stars

 3 Stars

We Could Fall – I received this book from a GoodReads giveaway.  Emmy and her husband Jack had a plan to get a divorce and on a fateful day he decided to tell her he wants to try again. That same she gets a voicemail from a famous actor, Duncan, who wants her as his therapist. There is a certain Mrs. Robinson theme and it even makes references to it. Duncan is so used to shielding every emotion and is working to be more authentic. Emmy and Duncan start to feel a connection but there is also the passive aggression husband to contend with in the end. A little too long but overall kept me engaged.

Back To You – Kelly has dated the rockstar, she even married him and had two kids with him, even divorced him. She is now ready to marry a new man and forget about her ex, Vaughan. Problem is Vaughan doesn’t want to let her go. She can see she is not in love with her fiance, he is just a safe choice. Vaughan begins to prove to Kelly he can be the father and family man that she needs him to be. I didn’t dislike this book at all, it just didn’t really have an arc or pull of emotion, just fell a little flat but I did root for them to find each again.

Good Times Good Laughs

Happy Monday! I will be recovering from all the laughs and drinks from the weekend so let’s get to it shall we?

I Did

margaritas
With a 2 hour early release on Friday, I snuck out of the office as if I was skipping school. I ended up at Margarita’s to have drinks with my work BFF. When I got home I ended up watching a few episodes of Bosch! Thanks to Kathy for posting about it. So good.

hiking

I watched a few more episodes Saturday morning before heading out for a hike. It was a perfect day for it too.  I used the app called Walk For A Dog, it gives money to your animal shelter of choice will every mile you log.

I went grocery shopping on the way home, then mowed my lawn and planted some grass seed. A little late but whatever.

The rest of the night I finished up the first Season of Bosch.

Sunday

Sunday I went for another hike in the morning, then read and took a nap before getting ready for Kevin Hart. We have a Suite so we stopped at Boston Beer Works for a pre-drink. The show was amazing! I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.
Since we went to the 7pm show we got out a little earlier than expected and stopped at Tavern on the Green for a nightcap and then headed home. It was late when I got home so I didn’t get much sleep. Going to be a long day.

Currently….

I have been stuck on the couch the last two days with a cross between sinus issues and flu like symptoms, so here is some things to help you get current on what I’ve been up to. In all honesty too it requires the least amount of energy so I can get another nap in too. 😉

Currently…

Reading: Eeny Meeny  – I received a free copy from NetGalley and I just started it but it is really good so far. Two people are kidnapped and the only way to make it out alive is to kill the other person. Detective Inspector Helen Grace is tasked with finding out who is playing this dark game.

Thinking: Seamus is a stinking con artist. I had to take him to the vet on Monday after he had another accident in the house on Sunday and he had a skin issue near his eye, and he was barking when I pet him. The petting I wasn’t worried about so much because he supposedly has arthritis but the newer issues combined made me worried. He was found to have Conjunctivitis, and they told me to go with the same flavor of dog food. Come to find out the petting thing is a behavior thing, he is trying to be dominate. So I worked on him for two nights and I actually got to pet him for 30 minutes without a growl. Progress!!

Wishing: For Sunday to get here, I am going to see Kevin Hart in Boston. So excited.

Watching: Bloodline on Netflix. It took me a bit to get into it but it’s really good. Kyle Chandler aka Coach from FNL. Yes, please. Season 2 has been approved so more to come.

Bloodline

Wearing: A tank top and capri yoga pants, i.e. my pajamas.

Wanting: To get back out hiking. I really want to go at least 3-4 times a week, it’s my favorite cardio workout.

Loving: Cuddle time with Seamus and being able to pet him again.
