Celebrating

Can the weekends not go by so fast, please. K, thanks! It was a whirlwind, but I got a lot accomplished so that is a good thing. Lots of shopping and I got to spend some of my Mother’s Day with my Dad and then walked over to my best friends house to celebrate my second Mom.

See, just one house down from my Dad lives the parents of my best friends. They just so happen to be twins. I appeared at the bottom of their driveway when I was 2 asking for friends to play with and they took me into their family. They were my second family. When my parents divorced I leaned on them a lot. I learned from them what a lasting relationship looks like, my love of books encouraged from my second Mom, she was a library para. Their Dad was handy and could fix just about anything.

Being able to celebrate with them was great, and seeing my Dad who had to play both Mom and Dad was also nice.

I Did

+ Friday I celebrated a long week with a gift from my work bestie. She got me the Straw-Ber-Rita as a just because gift. So sweet of her. I also went to bed around 8:45 pm. Let’s hope this week is easier.

+Saturday I made a good breakfast, did laundry, and cleaned the upstairs rooms. Then I hit PetSmart, Old Navy (picture below), Home Goods and Target. I was going to go to Lowe’s but it was crazy busy, and my patience was dwindling.

weekend

+The bottom left are the items from Home Goods. Most of the picture frames are for the office, hopefully I will finish that room next weekend.

+ I went grocery shopping, including everything needed to make the Cucumber Salad that Steph posted last week. It was a huge hit. I swapped the cilantro for Dill, and doubled the recipe.

+ Spending Sunday celebrating these marvelous Mother’s, they are all such strong and inspirational woman. i am so lucky to have them in my life.

Seamus Sightings

+ So much for clean sheets when Seamus just jumps in the middle of them. Lucky he’s cute. I did get some snuggle time with him though and some puppy kisses.

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday, we made it!!! It was a long week and it was exhausted but it is almost over. Since my Mom lives in Minnesota I won’t be able to celebrate Mother’s Day with her, but I will spend some time with my Dad, and then heading next door to my second family to celebrate with them too. It looks like the weather will be nice too. Well let’s get this show on the road so we can get to Friday night!!

Sometimes Life Is Messy

I like to read self-help books but usually I have to be in the mood to do so. They can be a bit hoakey and the authors tend to be overly self-involved. In saying that though I can usually get at least a little something from each one, a principle, a concept or an idea. Hopefully something I can put into practice or a thought to expand upon.

Disclaimer: I received a free unedited copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. I haven’t finished the book but a few phrases really stuck out and made me think. I won’t fully review until I finish but these thoughts wouldn’t go away.

17571811
Quotes from the book:

“our deepest desires are not something we have to go out and get; they’re clues to what’s inside us trying to get out. Rather than struggling to heal ourselves, our work is to strip away our false exterior and reveal our innate wholeness.”

“it was the end of an illusion that we are broken, inadequate beings that must fix or add something to ourselves to be complete.”

“This was why so many of our attempts to improve ourselves don’t work, or even make things worse. We attract a new partner but have the same old fights. We manifest a bigger paycheck and end up broke at a higher income bracket. Like trying to dig ourselves out of a hole, the harder we dig, the deeper we get.”

I started to think of this book in the shower thinking about my goal of selling my house within 2 years. I began to think of all the projects I have been doing lately like my office re-design (here and here)and while I love it I know it didn’t help me getting closer to the goal of selling my house. It was cosmetic work that could help stage it but it doesn’t add value and the money could have been used to replace windows, or something of more value.

It also caused extra furniture to have to be sold or removed, which is actually in my spare bedroom and is causing me stress since now my spare bedroom is a mess with the leftover items I need to sort and get rid of.  While I am not complaining, I love the room and it makes the room so much more functional, it just doesn’t bring me closer to the goal and it caused more clutter until I can get the items out, which stresses me out.

I started to think of the things that are making my life feel out of balance or causing stress.

1. Work

2. Not working out as much

3. My house

4. Feeling like I don’t have enough time

I am sure that in one point in time all of the above have stressed anyone out. Right? Sometimes more than one at a time.

In reading Emergence – Seven Steps For Radical Life Change, and mind you I am only on step/stage one but a principle idea of stripping away the pursuit of outside things to better your life, work with what was in you already to get what you want made me think.

1. Work is just not going to get less stressful right now. We are adding a growing business, learning that business, and so I am taking on more responsibility while also training a new person. It will be a good 4-6 months few months before the dust settles. I can however work on the other three so I don’t feel overwhelmed.

2. Working out is the last thing I want to do after a long day, but thinking if I run 3 miles it will only take 30 minutes or a Jillian Michaels 30 days shred it’s 20 minutes isn’t working. Trying to find the quickest way to the fastest results so I can move on to the other tasks that were stressing me, defeated the purpose of using exercise to reduce stress! A walk for 45 minutes can give me quiet that I need to think, dream, and calm my mind. The same can be said for hiking. Going back to a gym I am comfortable at rather than one I dread going to would help too.

3. Working on projects that will help add value to the home, de-clutter to bring calmness not chaos, and finishing the projects I need to finish to get it selling ready (liking paining all my trim work) will put my mind at ease and make me feel like I am working towards my goals.

4. Reducing some of the other time wasters and finishing projects will free up some time allowing it to not feel so overwhelming. Learning to say No if I need to, and making my life more clutter free will overall make me feel less rushed and stressed.

So while I haven’t finished or even come close to getting started on this book it has already gotten me to think differently. It has gotten me to focus on what my heart and mind needs, and using what I have now to create a happier space internally and externally.

What stress are you holding on to?

If there a way to reduce it using a resource you already have currently?

Happy Cinco de Mayo!! Taco Central

Mexican food is one of my favorites. I have a running joke about taking all my first dates to Margarita’s because I will never forget where my first date was and if I am going to cheat on my diet it is going to be on a Chimichanga! Needless to say I love that Cinco de Mayo allows me to splurge on a little Mexican food, and a Margarita.

A little history according to Wikipedia – The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army‘s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.[3][9] In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico’s Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16.

I am trying to be healthy, summer is coming so I tried to lighten it up. Some BBQ steak on the grill in flaxseed tortillas made a lighter soft taco.

Easy Soft Steak Tacos
Ingredients: Flaxseed Tortillas ~ lettuce ~ tomato ~ taco cheese ~ grilled steak ~ sour cream or Greek yogurt ~ squirt of lime juice

Directions: Marinate your steak in BBQ sauce or Ceasar dressing (I used Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey BBQ) for about 1-2 hours, and grill or use a ribbed grill plate on the stove. Assemble your soft taco by piling on the lettuce, diced tomato, and cheese, place the steak on top. Add a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt, and squeeze some fresh lime juice over top. Enjoy!

Bonus: For the Margarita I used Margarita mix and Parrot Bay Mango rum. Using two shots of the rum, to 4 shots of the mix. Add ice to a shaker, shake and pour! Couldn’t be easier!

A Level of Lazy

I had so many hopes and plans for this weekend. Then when I went to go do them I just shut down. Everything sounded so overwhelmingly too much work. I took that as a sign that I just needed to relax and do nothing this weekend. There is always next weekend for new projects. Right?

I Did

+ I got up at 3:30 am on Saturday and tried to go back to bed after letting Seamus out. So I ended up taking a nap at 8:30am, and twice more that day.

+ I finished the book Once Pure. I read the first and second book of this series and the third was even better. Tears were shed. Some hard subject matter at times but strength in surviving and moving forward. It is being released on May 19th and I’ll be doing a blog stop on the 27th so look for a full review then.

+ I tried to do yard work but after getting my gloves I turned right back inside. I decided a movie day would be better. Both were really good, but sad.

The Judge // You’re Not You

+Sunday was spent going grocery shopping, cleaning house and meal prepping. I cooked some chicken and steak on the grill. I also made some Paleo Chocolate Chip Banana Bread.

+ While my food was grilling I took the chance to sit outside to read, and enjoy a beer.
