I need a vacation from my vacation

I need a vacation from my vacation | Till Then Smile Often

While I am still technically on vacation for one more day I am checking in to share what I have done so far. Today will mostly consist of a few projects, a hike, and getting my house back in order after moving a bunch of stuff around. So I’ll get to it so it doesn’t get too long since I have 3 days to cover. Friday: I headed down to my Dad’s house to help him fix out his tablet settings. It took a little longer than expected since he then remembered a million other things to have me help him with on his tablet. After that I went to Blue Hills in Milton to go hiking. I hadn’t gone to that trail on over 4 years and I didn’t have a map so I was a little nervous. It was amazing because I seemed to remember it as if it was just a week. I missed that trail though it wasn’t as long as my normal hikes. I then did some shopping for one of my budgeted projects. After hitting a few stores I headed home and played catch up on some blogging and reading.

Hiking
Saturday I did a little bit more shopping trying to find some candlesticks so after a few stores I finally found them at Home Goods. I still need to spray paint them though. I headed home and took Seamus for a walk. I then took a short nap before having to get ready for Spooky world with Kate, Kate’s boyfriend and Emily for a Boston Blogger event. I’ll be sure to share more details later.

Spooky World
Sunday: I made a nice nice breakfast and enjoyed it over a new book. The next few hours were spent putting together this bookcase that became my new entertainment center. I had to rearrange where everything went and find a new place for some of the left over items. I still have some pictures to hang, and some decor items to get but that will have to wait. The old entertainment center has been with me for 13 years so it will take some getting used to. I also am hoping to get an item to remove the cable, DVD, and cable box from the top shelf so it can be used for decorating and hide some of the wires. I’ll update you when I find the piece. I headed out to grocery shopping around 2:30pm and it was much needed so I could make lunch. After taking Seamus for a walk I ended up taking a nap on the couch and then waking up at 7pm, so the night was pretty much over.

Sunday
Hopefully today is a little more relaxing and my house finally gets cleaned. Wish me luck!

Friday Favorites | Vacation Time

As of yesterday at 4:30pm I was on vacation until Tuesday. I may or may not have taken a quick nap on the couch for 30 minutes, but let’s just say this is much needed rest. I am looking forward to getting a lot of naps in while still getting a lot of hiking done, some DIY projects, some reading, knitting, and baking. You know the normal non-resting resting I always get myself into, then need another vacation. I am going to Spooky World too on Saturday which I am really excited about, I love Haunted Houses. So here is to packing in so much fun I want to collapse, and hopes for nap times.

Favorite DIY: This is such a fun and easy DIY that the candle project is going to be incorporated into my dining room tablescape. There are already a ton of leaves in my driveway and yard so I’ll have plenty of options.

Favorite Book Quote: This happens to me all the time!

Favorite Recipe: The fruit totally negate the maple and the bacon making this healthy. Right? Girl logic. You’re welcome!

Favorite Self Help: Chalene has been a favorite of mine for years. From when I fell in love with TurboFire and Chalene Extreme to her Push book based on her 30 day Push Challenge (also FREE) which is a video series that gets you making, setting and working on goals you set. She not only is a fitness Maven she also is really passionate about family and helping others achieve success and balance. She has a new 4 part series called Overcome the Overwhelm that helps you learn to do less and achieve more. She makes every thing sound so simple, and it is FREE!!! Holler! *This is not an affiliate thing I just really love her series, have done them myself and I have learned from them.

Fitness and Finance Goals

I don’t know what I was thinking trying to take anything on Fitness or otherwise during the busiest time of year for my work. By the 10th I was over the month, and by the 17th I had the eye twitch I seem to get every year due to the stress. It is constant from the time I get in till I leave. I end up going home and crashing on the couch. It wasn’t a total fail but it was not nearly what I was hoping for either.

Linking up with Steph from Life According to Steph and Steph from Not Entirely Perfect to share my results. For more information on the challenge click here.

Life According to Steph

My Goals:

Walk up to 70,000 steps per week – FAIL – In order to meet this I needed to work out 6 days a week. Too many nights just physically exhausted. Didn’t happen. According to my fitbit the highest I got was 55910 steps.

Go to the gym 4x per week – PASS – Although I did 4 days a week it was just so inconsistent, like Monday Friday Saturday Sunday. I would have liked more like every other day but it is what it is.

Weight training at least 3x per week – PASS – This one was kinda a gimme since if I go to the gym I do weights and then cardio. I like lifting more than I like cardio. I’d go to the gym just to lift to be honest. So it was added to be the easy one for me so I didn’t want to feel defeated if I failed at the others.

Getting back into a more consistent routine is going to be a priority next month since I will have much more energy and less stress. The theme for October is food so that will be a fun one.

I am also doing a wallet watch for October. It is a choose your goal time of “spending freeze” so you can set your own limits.

My Goals:

Save $300.00 to be added to saving to be used towards Christmas. I only use cash for Christmas so time to save.

Stay with budget for my grocery bill – recipe testing kills my budget every month so I want to work on this one.

No spending on clothes, makeup or accessories.

I am still going to work on a few house projects so I decided not to do a total spending freeze.

For more of my spending freeze results see here and here.

Bedroom “Mini” Makeover | DIY Side Table

I hesitate to even call this a “mini” makeover. Originally my plan was to move some furniture around, update the bedding to something lighter and add a bench. End over story! Well that is not how it went at all. I was able to reuse most of my decorations, and/or re-purpose some items from other rooms which really kept down the cost.

My vision for my bedroom was to keep the “earthy” feel to the room but just making it a little more tranquil and spa-like. What I wasn’t planning on was my bed not really fitting on the spot and having to come up with different side tables. The good news though is that my nightstands will find a new home in my guest bedroom. I was also able to use the stones and shells that I collected on my Maine vacation.

Reversible Comforter: Similar Here | Throw Blanket – Marshall’s : Similar Here | Picture Frame Tray – Old: Similar Here | Believe in Yourself Pillow: Similar Here and Here | Wall Sconces – Old Partylite: Similar Here | Bench – Made it myself – DIY instructions here.

For the side table decorations I re-used items from around the house. The only thing purchased was the glass apothecary jar I got from Home Goods to add the stones and shells. I bought the lamps awhile ago at Home Goods and the thing I was looking for when I first bought them was neutral. I wanted a tan and brown color. I mixed and matched the lamp and the base. You can always paint anything you don’t like if the base is say brass, just tape off and spray paint.

Rock and Shells from the beaches of Maine | Lantern – Old – Target: Similar Here or Here | Berries and Candle purchased from Michael’s | Lamp – Old – Home Goods: Option 1 Here – Option 2 Here

side table-1
If you are not near a beach, don’t worry Michael’s and A.C. Moore usually have faux shells and beach decorations. You can even hang a book or extra blanket from the rungs if you wanted.

Some pillows I’d like to possibly add:

Gray Pillows, 20x20 Pillow Cover, Decorative Pillow, Geometric Pillow, Modern Pillow Covers, Lyon French Gray
White Abstract Paint on Brown Rustic Striped Wood Throw Pillow

Now if you will bear with me a little longer I have a quick tutorial for you, for the side table since a few people asked about them. I originally wanted to use spindles in the middle and a circular top and base. I couldn’t really find a wide enough spindle to get the effect I wanted so I started looking for a different base. I found these stools at T.X. Maxx and figured they would be the perfect base. I wasn’t sold on the fact that they were rectangular on top but I kinda liked it as an added effect.

DIY Side Table
Supplies: Stool ~ 18″ Round Base ~ 2-3 cans of White Spray Paint – Matte finish ~ Optional brown acrylic paint ~ Sand Paper ~ Drill ~ #220 Grit Sandpaper ~ Ruler ~ #12 x 1-1/2 in wood screws ~ Screwdriver

1. Measure the center of the stool and mark with a pen or marker

2. Drill a hole through the stool

3. Measure the center of the round top and mark the center with a pen or marker

4. Drill a starter hole in the center of the top. You just want to give the screw a head start not go through the top.

5. Screw the top to the stool.

6. Spray the whole surface

7. Once dry use the sand paper to scuff up some of the edges to give it the aged look.

8. OPTIONAL: Use the brown acrylic paint to add some lines to the top and sides. Use a paper towel or rag to smooth it out and fade it. Use the sand paper too if needed. Spray over any areas you don’t like and start again.

Now I just have to add some artwork on the walls and the DIY lantern project I posted about here. I’ll be sure to post some options so you can help me pick out which art pieces to choose later.

Crockpot Chorizo Soup with Corn and Black Beans

The Fall is my favorite season, I am not sure what it is but I have the most amount of energy than any other season. On my endless to-do list this weekend was to clean out my fridge. I had a lot of items that I needed to use up before it went bad. This recipe was the result of that cleaning session. If you know me it is no surprise that I had Chorizo in the fridge. I also had a few cans of black beans that I wanted to use up to help make room in my cabinets.

If you are not a fan of Chorizo feel free to use Italian Sausage, chicken or ground beef. If you are vegetarian feel free to substitute the Chorizo for butter beans, kidney beans or another bean.

Crockpot Chorizo Soup with Corn and Black Beans
Ingredients: 3/4 or 1 pound of Chorizo ~ 2-4 stalks of celery – diced (approx. 1 cup) ~ 1 TSP Worcestershire Sauce ~ 3 cups of Vegetable Stock (Chicken or Beef stock is fine too) ~ 1 TSP Italian Seasoning ~ 15 oz Can of Black Beans (drained and rinsed) ~ 1/2 cup of diced onion ~ 1 cup of frozen corn ~ Parmesan (shaven or powdered – based on preference)

Soup
Directions: Are you ready for this …. throw all the ingredients in a crockpot. Leaving out the corn and the Parmesan cheese.

Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6 hours. One hour before serving add in the corn.

Ladle into a bowl and sprinkle the Parmesan into the center of the bowl. Devour.
