Friday Favorites | Knocked Out

Happy Friday! I am taking the day off since I have been coming down with something all week, body aches, hot then cold so I am going to rest today. Lots of naps and fluids and hope that works. I had no idea it was Friday the 13th either but I might have to pop in the movies just for festive sake. 🙂

So let’s get to the favorites so I can grab a nap.

Favorite Quote: Be the sunshine!

Be Sunshine Free Printable and Desktop Backgrounds

Favorite Recipe: This zucchini and goat cheese salad sounds amazing!

And, just a little bit of cheese goes a long way.
Favorite Book: I finished this book yesterday morning and it left me feeling light as a feather, and wanting to open a B&B. Jane feels quilty after losing her husband and her dog soon after, problem is she is sadder about the dog.  She plans to finally move back to San Diego but is stopping to help her Aunt and Uncle with their B&B while her Aunt has surgery. A dirty, scraggly dog is stranded on the road and she picks her up.

I have tossed the idea around in my head to open a Bed and Breakfast when I get older for awhile and Jane reminded me a lot of myself. Meaning I’d rather be cooking than dealing with people! haha! The dog plays a key part and just jumps off the page with her spunk. Adorable read. Looking forward to more from this author, full review to come. *I received this book free from NetGalley for an honest review but all opinions are my own.

Favorite Deal: I ended up getting my cards through a living social deal but when I looked at the card selection I was so shocked by the amazing quality. I ordered on Sunday and I got them on Thursday. They came out so good and they even gave me a $10.00 gift card and a discount code. I paid for these myself, this is not sponsored I was just really pleased with my cards and if you need cards I highly recommend Photo Affections. They also have 35% off and free shipping right now until 11/15

October Books I’ve Read

If you are happy and you know it read a book. It’s National Show Us Your Books Day!! What. Oh that is not a real thing? Well let’s make it a real thing, because books. Let’s get to it so us book lovers can go add a bajillion books to our TBR pile.

My rating system:
Five Stars: Blew me away, made me want to stay up till 3am to finish, would read again and again or I didn’t find anything I would want to change.
Four Stars: Really good book, fast paced or thought provoking, but may have dragged a bit or left something unresolved
Three Stars: Okay, didn’t thrill me but didn’t disappoint me either.
Two Stars: I almost didn’t finish, it may have irritated or offended me in some way.
** – Item was received from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I pull no punches though, so you get all my opinions good or bad.
NOTE: I may not care for a book or I may love a book and my reactions are based on my experiences and tastes. Please don’t let my opinions deter you if a book really intrigues you, and know all opinions are my own.

Five Stars

25489979

**Rescue Road: One Man, Thirty Thousand Dogs, and a Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway – This book broke me but also gave me hope. This is the story of a man to makes the trek from the South to New England with upward of 80 dogs at any given trip to save as many dogs as he can, with the help of all the angels involved in dog rescue.

He doesn’t just transport them, he gives them as much love and attention as he can so that their new journey to their forever home is a good one. The dark side of this story is the amount of dogs that are euthanized due to overcrowding in the South. The culture that doesn’t really care to spay or neuter their dogs, and treats dogs as nothing more than property. It was heartbreaking and I cried no less than 5 times reading this book, but the care and passion that some of these organizations showed just really encouraged me to help in any way that I can. If you want to see a happily ever after, check out Greg’s Facebook page to see all the pups.

four stars

4-stars

**Damage Done – This book was not at all what I expected. Julia was just a normal girl before her twin brother was convicted of murder after a school shooting. Julia was in the room but doesn’t remember what happened. She tries to move on in a new city with a new name. This book took a lot of turns and left me saying WTF more than a few times. The end was a little predictable but not overly so that it detracted from the overall story.

**The Coincidence of Coconut Cake – This book was compared to You’ve Got Mail and I had an image of Meg Ryan punching the air ready to take on Tom Hanks. Louella has a restaurant that is finally making money, but after finding her fiance in a compromising position she has a bad night when a reviewer comes in to her restaurant. The restaurant tries to hold on but it is just a matter of time. Lou meets the reviewer as a regular guy and she shows him the wonders of her town. Can she forgive him? Recipe is included in the book.

**Christmas in Vermont: A Very White Christmas – This book gave me all the warm and fuzzies. I loved the town and how everyone came together to help each other, it makes me want to live there. While the beginning was a little violent it really set the stage for Jack and Holly to reconnect later in the book. I loved the side story of helping Veteran’s returning from war and the reality of how tough it can be for them. I have a soft spot for veterans. There were a few eye roll moments that were a little over done and everything wrapped up a little too neatly but I overlooked them since I adored the rest of the story. Total Hallmark movie material.

4-stars-a

**Hanover House – Hanover House is going to be a study prison of some of the most heinous killers, it will be used to study and try to make changes in the system. This has been the dream of Dr. Evelyn Talbot after her friends were brutally murdered and her throat was slit by her boyfriend.
The Hanover House is not well received by the residences of the town it is being built, even by the State Trooper who is sworn to protect the town. I am looking forward to this series as it has already drawn me in. Now to wait…impatiently.

**Win Me Over – Callie seems like the kind of girl you love to hate because she has it all and makes it looks easy, but you can’t because she is just adorably sweet. She is running her own bakery, a former tiara queen, and the new dance team coach. Bennett Clark is the football coach and he struggles with an injury that ended his NFL career. A celebrity dance off throws them together and their chemistry grows. Bennett really pushes himself to a high standard and he lost everything and is still damaged. His team faces injuries that spirals Bennett’s own insecurities, but Callie tries to push through. The emotions were powerful in this book and felt real and honest.

 three stars

3-stars

** The Closer You Come – Brook Lynn was a regular girl who tries so hard to save her sister that she loses herself. Jase is recently starting over and Brook Lynn. I liked that Brook Lynn was normal, strong character. The secondary characters were fun and I look forward to reading ore to see where they go. I think the chemistry was good, though at times it was a little over the top the things that pulled them apart.

The Best Short Stories of Fyodor Dostoyevsky – I used to feel smart when I read Dostoyevsky and being a Sociology major it was pretty regular reading for me after college. I think I forgot how pretentious it was at times. I have to remember that he was born in 1821 so the times were different. Most of the stories were repetitive and could have used a lot of editing. He writes as more of a stream of consciousness in many of the stories, but  White Nights, The Christmas Tree and A Wedding, and a Gentle Creature were decent. I much prefer his full length novels.

Why Not Me? – The familiar let’s be friends celebrity book. You leave wanting to be BFF’s with Mindy. She was awkward in college, not finding where she fit, pushing her way through a male dominated field, as just makes you laugh while staying down to earth. Well played Mindy, well played. *Received free copy from Blogging For Books, all opinions my own.

3-stars-1

**Hard To Break – Quinn was a strong, independant, bull headed woman. Her weakness was her father who became an alcoholic after his wife’s passing. Quinn is left trying to keep him together and their garage. She can’t hang on for long and she loses the family garage to Tazen Watts, a custom car builder. He is arrogant, condescending, and rich. He automatically believes Quinn can’t be a mechanic because she is a girl, and calls her Angel at every turn. At moments he was really sweet and shares pieces of his childhood that wasn’t as glamorous. Overall the chemistry was intense but sometimes a little over the top. It was a quick read and had a happily ever after.

**The Heartbreakers – A little far fetched in that you will casually bump into a rock star and just happen to have chemistry. Also in your early 20’s you will be catching all the breaks and living the dream. I did like that there was some bumps along the way and that even with everything they had there was a sense of not following their dream completely. Cara was spunky and outspoken while Oliver was misunderstood.

Did Not Finish

23602247

**Loving Lucas – This book was just horrible for woman everywhere. A woman who was mentally and physically abused for a year and a half does not decide to live with a man within one day regardless if he is a cop and she does a background check. Not only that, she doesn’t sleep with them two days after meeting them. This was just way too far fetched and a disservice to woman who have been abused.

Sweet Relaxation

Well I didn’t take a lot of pictures this weekend but I got a lot done. It was supposed to be a relaxing weekend and it was, though I was productive too. Like that is a shock. Anyhoozle doozle, let’s get to the weekend review.
I Did

Friday night was spent with a relaxing glass of Moscato. I went to bed roughly early and I actually slept in. Well aside from waking up twice to let out Seamus I woke up just before 10 a.m. That never happens!!

I felt like I wasted so much of the day so I got to it, and headed out to do some shopping. I hit Savers to donate clothes, Home Goods (two more mugs – smh), then Lowe’s to return an extra plug from my oven install, Kohls for some new sneakers and boots (the sneakers are going back), the Post Office, then the library. Phew, I’m tired just typing it out.

shopping
New boots // New Coffee organizer from Home Goods
After some lunch and reading I headed out to the gym. I ended up joining the gym I first joined when I bought my house. It has expanded and they even have a hydromassaging table that I am excited to try out.

Sunday was all about cleaning up my lawn. I raked until my body was sore. I did get my Xmas card photos taken though, Mr. Seamus was happy to oblige. Let me know if you want a card and I don’t have your address and I’ll be sure to get it privately.

Grocery shopping, and cleaning happened in the evening with some baking of course. It was nice to create some new recipes in time for the holidays. I think I have a few winners. A Bourbon Peach Galette, and a Butterscotch pie with chocolate spread over the crust and topped with toffee bits.

Things I’d Rather Be Doing…

Adulting is hard. It is starting to get cold here, Seamus is not adjusting to the time change just yet (waking me up an hour early) and it is dark when I walk him in the morning and dark on the way home from work. I am starting to feel myself hibernating and these are some of the things that I would rather be doing that adulting.

Adulting is hard..I hate adulting

Reading: Come on you knew this one was coming. These are a few that I have downloaded and ready to read. Brother is my current book, and it’s super creepy so far.

books

 Rescue Me, Maybe // Brother

Once Kissed // A Bramble House Christmas

Watching: I have a ton of shows that are sitting in my queue on my DVR and spending some time catching up would be nice.

tv

The Walking Dead // Chicago PD

Scorpion // Grinder

Spending: Because buying workout gear totally counts as a workout, right?

What do you do to distract you from adulting?

Boo-tiful Weekend

Well my favorite holiday has come and gone which makes me sad. Though this means that Christmas movies will be on 24/7 and I am not mad about that at all. This is my favorite time of year. All the hope, love and good cheer really energizes me so I am excited. Yes it’s busy but it is also magical. I am just going to embrace it all.

I Did

Halloween
Friday I dressed up at work and I took a picture in the Target parking lot. I freaked out more than a few people there, it was hilarious. Then I watched a few of the Saw movies to add some inspiration.

Saturday I started the morning with some coffee and a book. I knew I was going to be gone most of the day so it was a nice way to start the day. I headed down to my Dad’s house around noon, so I could decorate his yard and get dressed up. I passed out candy for the night and ironically my Dad had on Xmas movies when it wasn’t on sports.

I made one kid cry and made at least 5 kids gasp in surprise and fear. It was epic.

food prep
Sunday was relaxing, spending the morning reading. I also had some shopping to do so I hit Old Navy, Marshall’s and then grocery shopping. I added another Reindeer to my collection.

After a nap on the couch in between more reading I did some food prep. I made two batches of Paleo Meatloaf and some Broccoli pie. Broccoli pie is my favorite dish that we have on Thanksgiving and it is a great way to use up the 4 bags of broccoli I had in my freezer. Win!

Seamus Sightings

Seamus channeled his inner E.T. but this angel is also a pretty cute devil.

This week has gone by so quickly! I am finally home from my work trip and it was so good to see Seamus. I got plenty of puppy kisses last night. I am dressing up today for work and hoping I am not the only one, though I do know at least one more person is dressing up. It is hard when it falls on a weekend. I am looking forward to freaking people out though on my drive into work. Well let’s get to my favorites from the week, shall we?!

Favorite Quote: Just go for it, you only have one life.

Sometimes there is no next time, no timeouts, and no second chances. Sometimes it’s now or never.

Broken Record

I am going to try and keep it short today because I feel like a broken record. Work is crazy and my feelings of being overwhelming with tasks to finish have not gone away. I have a work trip this week so I most likely won’t be posting much this week.

This weekend was all about trying to get caught up on house things. Just the basics but so very necessary.

I Did

Saturday I started the morning with a trip to the vet for Seamus to get his nails clipped. They were so impressed with how good he was, gold star! Proud Mamma.

When I got home I immediately went to my basement. It is separated into two rooms and one is used for storage since I don’t have a garage. It houses all my holiday decorations, china dishes, all my tools and my kayak. It was a mess and piled up with stuff I didn’t put away properly and because the kayak was in the middle of the room making it hard to reach things. I moved on of the racks and moved the kayak to one side. It is so much more accessible. This picture was taken mid cleanup. Let’s just say I need a yard sale once I am home long enough for someone to pick it up.

After I went outside to rake my lawn. It took a few hours and then Sunday it rained and doesn’t even look like I even raked. Grrr.

After taking Seamus for a walk and a quick shower I headed out for some shopping. I was looking for some birthday presents for upcoming friends birthdays but my body was so sore I didn’t get much done.

weekend

This book….this book. It broke me down in so many ways. I literally cried at least ten times while reading this book. When I finished I went to Facebook to keep updated on some of the groups mentioned and made a donation. It is a story about Greg Mahle, who drives down to the South every two weeks to bring adoptable dogs up North with his pet transport business. He is not just a driver, he really cares about each and every dog. He is a hero, and throughout the book they talk about all the other unsung heroes who do so much to help the dogs who otherwise wouldn’t make it.

The overpopulation in the Louisiana and Texas area and the high euthanasia rate was astounding, up in the 90% in some cases.  The heroes would use their own money, and open up their own homes just to save one more dog. They also worked full time jobs on top of working tireless to help the dogs.

The Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward group go around and feed stray dogs, sometimes digging in and around dumpsters. They are not a shelter so they try and connect with others in the area to help those they can when possible. This video shows just how dedicated they are about helping dogs.

Seamus Sightings

Can you imagine if the shelter hadn’t rescued this little ball of cuteness? He was one that people thought would be there long term. Fearful of strangers he barked and lunged at everyone through his kennel. Little did they know he is a lovebug. Their loss, my gain.

Friday Favorites | No rest

Happy Friday! It was a rough one since I had to move to a temporary location at work as they build new desks to accommodate more people (always a good thing) and it was only for a few days, but very distracting. Everything is just packed in bins so it is hard to find what I need.

Monday I will move back and Tuesday another road trip. Fingers crossed I get everything done today I need to or I may bring work home. fEnough about me, let’s get back to what you really came here for, Friday Favorites.

Favorite Quote: Be an example or a warning.

I would like to take this moment to thank you, bull-shitters who cheat off my tests, assholes who treat me like shit and divas who spend more time fixing their hair than breathing... ♥ Thank you :):

Favorite Recipe: That apple center looks divine.

Stuffed Apple Pie Cupcakes with Brown Sugar Cinnamon Icing- super simple cupcake stuffed with apple pie filling and topped with an amazing icing.

Favorite Fall Decor: Such a simple and easy way to decor for Fall. Throw in some leaves, mini pumpkins and pinecones.

Favorite DIY: This craft looks super easy and really cute too!

Cute and easy Mason Jar Fall Luminary - tutorial at createcraftlove.com!

Favorite Funnies: This will always be funny.

Ok, I have to try this...It's funny every time!

Go get your Friday on!

Why Not Me? | Book Review

Well things have been getting really hectic at work so I am having less and less time lately to do much. Having a fun book that made me laugh was a nice reprieve from all the stress. Mindy’s new book Why Not Me? had a lot of laughs but it had some really serious moments too.

She has such an interesting way to look at life and she pokes a lit fun at how ridiculous hollywood is and that normal woman just don’t live that way. I applaud her for being real and sharing the good and the bad.

Review: As I think is common with most comedian books, I think their main objective is for you to read the book and end up thinking “I could be best friends with this person” and Mindy succeeded.

I had no idea that she was from Massachusetts which was an awesome factoid. I love that she shared the embarrassing and not always glamorous side of her job. I also love that she talks about how it was all her hard work that got her to where she is now. That aligning herself with the right people to mentor her and to learn from was one of the things that made her successful. I really liked the stories she told and the inside look. I would have much preferred to have listened to an audiobook version than read it since you don’t get her sarcastic undertones, but it did make me want to go watch the Mindy project.

I actually ended up binge watching the whole first season last weekend. I even got sucked into an hour long interview she did with one of her best friends B.J. Novak at BookCon.

Check out the summary and add it to your Goodreads.

*I was provided a free copy of the book via Blogging For Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
