Friday Favorites | Back Home

I am not sure where this week has gone. I am finally back from my work trip which was exhausting but very productive. I have so much catching up to do that I will hopefully get done this weekend. It is early release Friday though so hoping to take advantage of that so I can spend time with my work bestie. So let’s get to it, Friday here we come!

Favorite Quote: Nobody is perfect!

Find someone who knows you're not perfect but treats you as if you are. Picture Quote #1
Favorite Recipe: I may be boozed out after this week but this sounds pretty good. Everclear isn’t sold in Massachusetts though so most likely would have to use something else.

July Books I’ve Read

Well I am still plugging along on my two book challenges. For the full lists see here and here. I am close to being done and most of the books are already checked out of the library so I just need to finish them. So far I haven’t switched any of my books out which was a surprise.

Hopefully you find a book or two you want to read too. Just remember books that connect with me may not connect with you and that is okay, as long as you are reading!

My rating system:
Five Stars: Blew me away, made me want to stay up till 3am to finish, would read again and again or I didn’t find anything I would want to change.
Four Stars: Really good book, fast paced or thought provoking, but may have dragged a bit or left something unresolved
Three Stars: Okay, didn’t thrill me but didn’t disappoint me either.
Two Stars: I almost didn’t finish, it may have irritated or offended me in some way.

** – Item was received from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I pull no punches though, so all opinions are my own.

NOTE: I may not care for a book or I may love a book and my reactions are based on my experiences and tastes. Please don’t let my opinions deter you if a book really intrigues you, and know all opinions are my own.

Five Stars

5 Stars

Dog Crazy: A Novel of Love Lost and Found – While this book is about a pet bereavement counselor who loses herself when she loses her pet, moves to a new city and starts over it is more about her recovery with the help of her friends dog in order to help a girl try and find her dog. Anya believes her dog was stolen and Maggie is determined she can help her move on. She helps her search daily not knowing how much it helps her. This story is not about loss it’s about the love of friends, family, and the healing powers of dogs.

** What Doesn’t Kill Her –  This book just floored me, it was fast paced and it was intense. Flint kidnapped a young Reggie and held her captive for 4 years, she was saved only when an accident with her in the trunk left Flint in a mental hospital with a brain injury. He has been plotting ever since on how he can get out and capture her once again. He evades escape and leaves a trail of bodies. Reeve once known as Reggie teams up with the retired FBI agent who once worked her case. This is a series so I will be sure looking for the next book.

four stars

4 stars

** Grayson – This was a book that focusing on Angie who is a nursing student and takes a job at a house cleaning out the clutter. While her boss tells her not to go upstairs she does after a cup of coffee is left for her daily. She also gets rescued from Grayson and wants to thank him. She pulls him out of his self-imposed exhile catching glimpses of his smile. Grayson warns her away and is honest about his schizophrenia. She still finds herself falling for him.

This was a interesting romance story and shed light a little on schizophrenia. I liked the connection between the two and how they complemented each other. It was graphic so not for the squimish but I think it was within context.

The Life We Bury – Thirty years is a long time to spend in prison for a crime you didn’t commit. Carl Iverson now faces his final days and weeks in a hospital with Cancer, he decides to tell Joe his story as his dying declaration. In doing so these two are tied together in telling the true story of a young girl brutally murdered. All is never as it seems. A twisting tale that kept me interesting right to the end.

The Duff : Designated Ugly Fat Friend – I thought this was going to be a light and fluffy YA book and boy was I wrong. The feelings that Bianca felt being the “ugly duckling” to her beautiful friends, her Mother being absent and the problems that causes were visceral. When Wesley the good looking jock keeps pushing her buttons she pushes back by kissing him. When they get paired together for a school assignment they begin an affair out of hate, well at least for Bianca. Wesley has his own issues that he masks with humor and a bad reputation to keep people at a distance.

I really liked the overall message aside from the promiscuity of teenagers. I decided to watch the movie after finishing the book and I have to say don’t even bother. It is nothing like the book, the only thing that was the same was the two characters but everything in between was changed. Total crap.

4-stars

** Even in Paradise – There are always moments that can break you, and Julia is broken. Her friendship with Charlotte or Charlie is what helps her heal even for just a moment. Charlie is just your average person who is surprised when the great Julia Buchanan befriends her. It becomes even more surreal when her wealthy family takes her in too. The lure of the summer home, the parties, the dresses is all consuming. It doesn’t hide that the family is still reeling from a loss of one of their own.

The loss of Julia’s sister is hidden away. While there was no major arc to the story I felt it showed how life ebbs and flows. That sometimes life moves in directions you don’t want it to go in, and sometimes you have to grow up and make decisions that are hard.

** Does This Beach Make Me Look Fat?  – This book read like you were a best friend having coffee. The stories were light and fun for the most part. A mother daughter duo and you can see the similarities. The stories were short and not in any particular order.

** Those Girls – I went back and forth between 4 and 5 stars and decided on 4 because of how much it wrecked me. This is so much pain and destruction in the book and while there is some healing I just wanted it all the end. Not the story but the absolute evil. The three sister first run away from home after their father attacks them during a drunken rage. They run into some trouble on the way and the girls never really catch a break. I devoured this book mostly because I wanted to know what happened to them.

**Disclaimer – It is graphic and does detail brutal events. Not for the faint of heart or those who have experienced trauma personally.

 three stars

3 stars

**  Forward Pass – Shay carried a torch for her brother’s best friend Joe. Joe has a hard time shaking his play boy image but when he ends up sharing the house of his best friends little sister he wishes his reputation didn’t follow him everywhere. This is lot of miscommunication in the story and at times was a little over the top. Overall a cute story though.

Accidents of Marriage – This was an audiobook I listened to while working out so it might have lost some punch since it took me almost 2 weeks to finish it. Maddy was a social worker married to the passionate Ben, a lawyer who had passion and drive. She soon learns that the passion can quickly turn to rage. His outburst become more frequent and she finds herself trying to calm the rage. One fateful day an accident lands Maddy in the hospital struggling to perform the easiest of tasks after being in a coma. She leans on Ben to help her through even though her family directs their rage at Ben. Was it’s Ben’s road rage that caused the accident? An in depth at the complexity of marriage and relationships. The family member instigated a lot of drama which really started to annoy me and made it a less enjoyable read for me.

Simply From Scratch – I loved that the author was from New England because there was a lot of references to some places I knew. Zell lost her husband during a Katrina relief mission and just hasn’t recovered. She decides to start baking and almost burns her house down. Her next door neighbor’s daughter offers to help her bake and enter a contest. The relationships are the focus of this book with a little romance sprinkled in.

3-stars

The Underwriting – This book is heavy in the Wall Street lingo. It does provide a behind the scenes look into what it takes to get a company to go public. A lot of money is at stake, and the back stabbing, double dealing, and last minute saves are needed. A new dating app similar to Tinder is set to go public, a shift in CEO’s threatens to kill the deal, also the death of a girl who used the app the night of her death. The inner workings of the financial stuff was a little boring at times but it was interesting, and the ending shocked me.

** Miss Match This story had all the makings of a good story. Woman down on her luck after being fired from a job after telling her slimy boss no to his advances. Blake is in need of a wife to hang on his arm he is too busy heading up his company so he hires a matchmaker. Andrea applies for the job and her fiesty nature intrigues Blake. There were a few parts I really didn’t like about the book, that could have landed Blake in jail and a ton of miscommunication. I know part was to push the story along so I left it as average. The chemistry was good though.

Maine Vacation Recap

It has been a few days since I have been back from my vacation in Maine, but I think I am still coming down. I really could wake up everyday there, with the sound of the waves, the stillness of the mornings. How many more years till my retirement?

Tomorrow I am travelling again for work so I won’t be posting much, but I will be linking up tomorrow for Show Us Your Books, with Jana and Steph so be sure and check back in for what I’ve been reading. I am almost done with both book challenges.

Maine is all about just sitting around the yard with family, reading, talking and just being with family. We walk the beaches everyday, I ended up with a full pail of white stones and shells. It’s an addiction of mine. We head into town for ice cream or some shopping but still make time for afternoon naps. Each person makes a dinner for one of the nights.

Well then lets get to it since it is going to be pretty picture heavy.

Air Conditioner

After such a horrible Winter it seems we are having a brutal allergy season. With that my A/C was getting more and more dirty with pollen and other debris getting into it, and I started to see some black mold spores too so I conquered cleaning it. I clean it usually after every season but it really couldn’t wait since I have been coughing for the last two weeks. Winner, winner!

Under all that hair is a dog, I swear. Seamus also got a new package from Chewie, this Beef Tendon chew was a huge success and made in the USA. I got a free sample for review but this one is Seamus approved.

Happy Vacation eve, or Friday. Whatever you want to call it! 😉 I am so excited about spending some time with family on the coast of Maine. I get up earlier than everyone else so I read a book while watching the sunrise. It will be much needed quiet time. Lots of walks on the beach and lots of laughs. I most likely won’t be posting until I get back but I will be sharing a lot of pictures on Instagram so be sure and follow along there.

Now on to some Friday Favorites.

Currently…

Well my mind is officially on vacation mode. I have one and a half work days to get through and then I am gone. My heartburn was gone yesterday which I am so grateful for even though I am now suffering with an allergy attack. I think some crisp Maine air will do the trick though. I just have  a quick stop to the DMV/RMV to renew my license and a quick trip to the library before I am ready. Can’t forget a quick trip to the liquor store too. So since my brain isn’t fully functioning I figure I’ll leave you with some things I am currently doing.

Currently…

Working Out to: I bought these with my own money, you can click on the pictures to go to Amazon for more info. They are not affiliate links.

Personal Training with Jackie: Power Circuit Training – Total of 5 workouts last only 15 minutes each but they are tough. My hamstrings were so sore after one workout for two days. Killer but effective.

UFC Fit: I have only done one workout so far but it is a good workout. I was dripping in sweat. It is a mixed martial arts training workout. Requires a weight set nothing too heavy though. So far I’m loving it but will give more info after I do a few more workouts.

Currently Watching: Murder in the First – I am glad it is back. I am a little lost with the splitting of the stories but still really good.

Murder in the First (2014) Poster

Wishing for: My vacation to start. So looking forward to spending time with family. Not worrying about anything but sunrise, reading, laughing and joking with family. We leave Saturday morning.

Reading: Chasing River. I am only about a third in but so far it’s decent. It takes place in Dublin which is a hostile backdrop but still really beautiful.

Halfway to Normal

I think this weekend was just what I needed. While I still need to get some things in order, it was good progress. I am six days away from vacation so it is looking up. I did miss a birthday party I really wanted to go to but the heartburn and stomach cramping was really bothering me. I feel like I do have a plan and momentum so I am feeling somewhat normal again. Here was some of my weekend…

I Did

weekend
+ Friday I had to have a Margarita in honor of National Tequila Day. It’s a must.

+ Saturday I headed to the library to pick up another book for one of my challenges. I’ll need books while on vacation. We talk a lot so I don’t read as much but I do get up before everyone so it helps.

+ I went to this park by my house and one square around is a little over a mile and I got in 4 rounds walking/running.

+ I got some yard work done and mowed the lawn, such a good workout. My lawn is finally green again after being all dirt from Winter.

weekend-1

+ Saturday night I was not feeling well so I decided to stay home. The heartburn is the worst of it lately. So I went to Redbox and I got Duff and American Sniper. The book was really good but the movie was terrible. It strayed so far from the book it was ridiculous, just terrible.

+Sunday I finished a book in the morning. It was just ok. After grocery shopping I went to Target for some new towels and other essentials then to Old Navy. I was in need of some new tank tops and workout gear. Total score. Then I hit the park again for just over 3 miles.

+ Getting back on track with my health/fitness I made some Almond Flour pancakes.

Seamus Sightings

Seamus-1
Overall it was a good weekend and I got a lot of cleaning done. Worked out a lot which helped my mind to clear. I still have a ways to go but it is a good start.

Reflections

I know that for the most part we try to put our best selves out there because really who wants to read someone complain all the time. I do try to reflect the good and the bad times on this blog and in real life. For the most part I try and look at the good parts of life but I do have my moments. The ups and downs of life are going to happen with every one and every season of life. Lately it feels like I am in a down period.

I am going to do my best to break out of it, and I will try hard to not be in it for long. Normally I get even more introverted than I am usually until I work through it, blame the analytical Virgo that I am. I become a little more reflective and these are some of the things that are troubling me, or putting me in a funk.

Source

+ I have been struggling to keep up with my housework. I have my own home and so I have to clean it myself. I know, cry me a river. I am lucky but some weeks it is just overwhelming with other commitments. Also dog hair everywhere. Shedding season stinks.

+ Work has been challenging, in a good way in that I have new responsibilities and hiring some people for support but it does come with stress. Training is a lot of work. This is the busy time of year so it will get better in a few months, I just have to get through it.

+ With the stress I haven’t been eating as clean as I normally do and I am feeling it. I am not working out as much either. Lots of travel and events haven’t helped but I need to be better.

+ I don’t really sleep much on a good day (like 5.5 hours) but recently I have been getting even less, tossing and turning.

+ I struggle with trying to juggle to remember everyone’s birthday and try to get them something. My birthday is next month and I struggle with wanting to pretend it’s not really a birthday and whether or not anyone even cares.

+ I have been having pains in my chest. No heart attack pains but stress pains, and being anxious.

+ I’ve also been having heartburn from not drinking enough water. I usually get hiccups too which is a sign I need more water. I normally drink about a gallon and a half of water so even 60 ounces isn’t enough.

+ While I got the green light from the Vet for Seamus I also got a call from them on Monday. They said he has slightly elevated enzymes from his liver panel blood work. There is nothing I can do at this point but he will need to be monitored in the next 6 months. More than likely I will take him back in 3 months so I can have peace of mind. This one just about breaks me the most. I know he won’t live forever but I don’t think I can handle it right now. (I start crying as I type this and Seamus comes running and leans right into me and kisses my face, he needs to be ok) *I also saw this post on Facebook regarding Beneful dog food, which I used to feed Seamus for years – one of the supposed side effects – liver damage. Link to News Article

I am not writing this for sympathy but to get it out of my head. Maybe someone might say “Me too” and feel better that they aren’t going through it alone. Maybe it’s just for me so I can acknowledge it and move on. Maybe so I don’t feel like I have to be perfect all the time. Maybe it’s just to explain in case I pull back a little bit. I have to be a little selfish so that I can figure everything out, and get back on track. I know that is a lot of maybe’s and just maybe it’s okay not to know for sure.

So that I don’t leave this post on a total downer I bring you a quote from the Infamous SNL skit Jack Handy, which was in the back of my head while writing this post.

Family Time

I can’t even remember most of the weekend so you are going to get the highlight reel. It was also really hot so doing anything just sounded exhausting.  Today I have an new employee starting so wish me luck that I don’t break this one. 😉

I didn’t get to my project just yet but it’s on the list. My ever growing list of things I haven’t gotten to lately, but on the list at least.

I Did

July

Friday was early release so three co-workers got together with me at Margarita’s for some drinks. We had a ton of laughs and when a group of British soccer coaches sat next to us we bullied one of them into taking a picture with us. It was a blast. Also I am not a good day drinker because I was pretty much done the rest of the night.

Saturday I finished Does This Beach Make Me Look Fat which was one of my Literary Ladies books.

I took Seamus to the vet, and he got a gold star, though he still needs to lose weight. He maintained but he could stand to lose 3 pounds. 🙁

After a workout I started Even in Paradise and finally got caught up with the new season of Suits. I was still recovering so it was an easy night.

Sunday morning was spent working and then working out.

In the afternoon I went down to my brother’s house to celebrate my Sister-In-Law’s birthday which is officially on Tuesday.

It turned into a craft night with one doing loom knitting and the other doing tissue paper art. Oh, how we have aged.

Ha!

I am hoping that I actually do a project this weekend, maybe my coffee table needs a new top. We shall see. If it’s too hot I might melt and all bets are off. Either way it’s time for Friday Favorites.
