Apple Berry Sangria

My Aunt and Uncle  gave me a bunch of wine a few Christmases ago, I used some of it to make some Gluhwein or Mulled Wine and I still have a few bottles left. I don’t really drink that often, I know how is it still left?! It had been a rough week last week and I thought that Sangria was a great way to relax and also use up some of that wine. What I love about Sangria is you really just pour it all together and just let it sit in the fridge and get better.  I am also more of a white wine person but with Sangria it makes me like red.

Apple Berry Sangria
Ingredients: 1.5 Liters of Red Wine ~ 750ml of White Wine ~ 1 cup of Smirnoff Orange Vodka ~ 1 cup of Apple Juice ~ Fruit of Choice: I used 1 cup of frozen Strawberries ~ 1 cup of frozen Peaches ~ 1 cup of frozen cherries ~ Sprite or 7 UP

OPTIONAL: Sugar or sugar subtitute – Depending on the quality of wine you may need to add sugar, add 1/3 cup at a time to taste. I ended up using a cup of Truvia for the whole batch.

Directions: Add all the ingredients to a large container leaving out the Sprite or 7 UP. Once you are ready to serve fill a glass halfway, then add the Sprite/7 UP to taste.

Apple Berry Sangria

Enjoy, in your freshly raked lawn with a good book, or doing whatever else. 😉

Spring Fever

Well another weekend gone. I am a little sad it’s over because I got so much done, talk about Spring fever. I can tell it’s Spring because I had the energy of 10,000 men, okay not that many but a lot. I really need to work on my yard so I may have to put the wood projects on hold but we shall see. I love building things. I have a lot of projects in my head to like a new entertainment center, a new buffet/storage for my dining room, and also a pantry. We shall see.

Also I can’t forget today marks the day for Marathon Monday. The 6 mile marker is in my city and I have a few friends running. Hopefully today is a good day for all the runners. Boston Strong!

 I Did

Friday I picked up all the wood needed for the floating shelves for my office.

Saturday morning after reading I got to putting all the shelves together. This should have gone faster but I kept getting distracted.

lunch-shelves
Once I got the shelves up I paused for lunch making a salad with ground linguica. So good. I also made Sangria, recipe coming.

I got the stain on and then waited for it to dry. Drinking Sangria and finishing The Girl On The Train made the time go by quickly. Sacrifices. 😉

Sunday the majority of the day was spent in my yard. I started by spraying down my front steps, weeding the front bed, and laying down top soil and mulch. I also raked and cleaned up all the broken branches. Got some tulips ready to be planted, one of my favorite flowers beside the Calla Lily.

After a few hours I took a break to go to Home Goods and grocery shopping. After getting home I cleaned out my grill and did some chores inside while cooking up a burger stuffed with a Chedder Horseradish and bacon cheese spread. First grill of the season.

One of the projects for my office was a reading nook. The chaise I bought is the perfect place for reading and now the shelves are the perfect place for the books I want to read or display. I built these floating shelves using the plans provided by Shanty2Chic. I also popped into Home Goods for a few accessories like the globe, white jar, and blue vase everything else I had already in the room or pulled from another room.

The only thing left to do is purge a few things and also hang some art. Almost done!!

This week has been absolutely brutal. I have been training a new person at work while also helping out with 150 sales people learning our program. It has led to hours of Web training and troubleshooting. I love helping people no matter what it is doing, but doing so on top of my normal job can be exhausting. It was a mimosa and lounging kinda night on Thursday. We are almost there though so let’s get to it!

Office Makeover – DIY L-Shaped Desk

My office has been bothering me for awhile. I don’t spend a lot of time in it except to do my makeup but that is mostly because I feel like it was always a mess. It stores all my receipts and important documents, it has my printer and desk items. It also stores all my craft supplies, like my knitting yarn, my sewing fabric, my sewing machine and all paper supplies.

The hard part is incorporating all those things without feeling cluttered or messy. The room also had a lot of furniture and supplies I acquired along the way and nothing really matched and coordinated.

My idea was to really pair down this room, make it more efficient and also a little more grown up. The first part of this makeover was a new desk, since I couldn’t even fit my printer on the desk. This room already had two desks, but with that I lost a lot of floor space. This L shaped desk really frees up a lot of room and lets everything be a little more spread out.

This was also my first project using my new Kreg Jig and it will get used a lot so it was worth the $30+ for the kit.

Supplies: Qty 5 1x6x8 boards (cut so you have 5 boards measuring 52″ and 4 cut to measure 40″ – you’ll have leftover wood) ~ Kreg Jig ~ 2 adjustable clamps ~ 1-1/12 inch pocket screws (Package of 50) ~ 1 4x4x6 lumber ~ drill ~ sanding block ~ stain of choice ~ paintbrush ~ Two Vika Annefors Table legs/Bookcases (previously purchased from Ikea)

If you get Lowe’s or Home Depot cut the wood to size for you, then you have completed half the battle, otherwise cut boards to size. Next lay out your 52″ boards, using the jig place the two “feet” against the edge of the board and secure with the clamp.

desk-1

Drill through the jig guides. Remove the clamps and move to the middle and then the other side of the board and repeat. This will give you two pocket holes on the left side, 2 in the middle and 2 on the right side. Repeat on 3 more boards, the last board will not need pocket holes.

Repeat the same process on 3 of the 40″ boards.

Line up the 52″ section with the 40″ section. Where the board meet mark off the location for at least 4 places. Then using the jig drill the pocket holes into the 52″ boards. It should be a backwards, so that when you flip it over it will be the right directions.

Drill pocket holes into the 4×4 lumber on two opposite sides.  Using a dry paint brush clean up all the dust from the pocket holes. Now using the jig’s drill attachment use the 1-1/2 pocket screws to assemble the 52″ boards together, then the 40″ boards together, then the two sections together.

desk-2
Once that is assembled attach the leg in the back corner of the L. Give the desk a rough sanding and then wipe down with a clean rag.

desk-3
desk-6
Stain your desk and the leg. I used MinWx PolyStain in Mission Oak-Satin Finish.

DIY-DESK
If you can’t find the bookcase legs, since they seem to be discontinued at Ikea you can always make an additional 4 legs and attaching two to each end.

March Books I’ve Read

I have been reading a lot lately though now that the weather is nice enough to be able to do some DIY projects like my new desk and my new vanity, I imagine my reading will take a nose dive. I have a few more I really want to get through in the next few weeks. Oh who am I kidding READ.ALL.THE.BOOKS. Here are the books I’ve read this month.

My rating system:
Five Stars: Blew me away, made me want to stay up till 3am to finish, would read again and again or I didn’t find anything I would want to change.

Four Stars: Really good book, fast paced or thought provoking, but may have dragged a bit or left something unresolved

Three Stars: Okay, didn’t thrill me but didn’t disappoint me either.

Two Stars: I almost didn’t finish, it may have irritated or offended me in some way.

Five Stars

Five Stars

All The Bright Places – Violet and Finch are both consumed with death. Finch with all the ways in which he could die, and Violet with her sisters death, which she feels responsible for happening. They meet at the bell tower at school and Violet becomes the hero, while Finch takes the heat even if that wasn’t how it really happened. They form a friendship and through a school project journey all over their state. This brings a voice to depression, mental illness and the secrets we don’t show the world. So moving and left me in tears.

The Denim Blue Sea – I am a New England Beach bum so I really enjoyed this book. It brings my love of the beach, and my time at the beach to the surface and makes me want to vacation at Stony Point. Read a more detailed review here.

Blackberry Winter – This book was a quick read but it also pulled me in. From the story of Vera, the struggling single mother from the Depression era to Claire a mother in mourning after a tragic accident nearly 80 years later. Each piece of the puzzle of Vera’s missing son, during a surprising May snow storm begins to reveal itself. Claire is the reporter assigned to find a story, while trying to deal with her own marriage and troubles.

four stars

Four Stars

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail – While I felt a portion of the writing was a little bland her journey really inspired me. To hike for 3 months for over 1100 miles, that takes a lot of mental toughness. Read how it inspired me here.

Normal – This book is pulse pounding from the get go. It is told through the point of view of a serial killer and opens with him killing one woman and kidnapping the other, which he keeps in a cage in his basement. It was dark and twisted similar to an episode of Dexter. It does bounce around a bit, which is why I gave it 4 stars, otherwise overall all really enjoyed it.

Holding Strong – Lovers of romance are sure to love this one, Cherry comes off as a flirt because she can’t have the one she wants, Denver an up and coming MMA fighter. He decides he can’t resist her any longer, and one night just isn’t enough. Her past comes back and has the potential to break them up if Cherry doesn’t give in to the protection that Denver gives freely. The other MMA fighters pull a tight circle around Cherry to protect her, making her part of their family. I am looking forward to the other stories in this series.

Just A Little Flirt – I read the first book in this series, Just a Little Crush and wanted to read more about Fallon, wish granted. Fallon wants to focus on this intern and not being the wild child everyone expects her to be. Cade is the to good to be true therapy dog who volunteers at the same place as Fallon. Fallon doesn’t want him to judge her for her past, but even if he doesn’t can she commit?

 three stars

Three Stars

Ugly Love – I have seen this book all over social media at one point so I gave it a shot. Tate and Miles have instant chemistry even if Tate did find Miles passed out drunk outside her brother’s apartment where since is now staying. Miles wants her but not a relationship, and Tate agrees. The things I didn’t like about this book was that it was very immature in the that Tate is constantly settling for less than she deserves and always trying to talk herself into being in this relationship hoping he will change. The second half redeems the book and the ending was fitting.

Come Home  – Jill is finally happy after a messy divorce, now engaged to a loving man. The daughter of her ex-husband shows up to tell her, that her ex-husband was murdered. This begs the question of just how ex, is an ex and their family. Jill tries to help the daughter even when she seems troubled and wild. This story dragged a lot, and while I liked the overall story it would have been better if edited down.

What books have you read this month?

Will you add any of these books to your list?

I’m A Girl and I Build Things

I am not sure where this weekend went but I know most of it was taken up with more work on my office. I replaced a desk that took up one whole wall with a smaller vanity. This will make room for the chaise that is supposed to be delivered on Wednesday. While the room still has a lot of work to be done including getting rid of a lot of excess craft supplies, and building the shelves I mentioned here, it is coming together.

I think a yard sale is going to be in order after all this is done.

I Did

weekend
Saturday I did some shopping at Home Goods, Target, and Lowe’s. I started building a new vanity.

While I was waiting on the stain to dry I had a Beermosa, thanks to Laura from Life With Lolo for posting about it. I will try it will a sweeter beer next time but really good.

Sunday morning started like any other, with a coffee and a book. Thanks to Kristen for gifting me this book after seeing my library have over 1000+ people waiting on the book. I was getting a little confused at the beginning because of the time switches but it is really good so far.

I was hoping to take a lawn care class at Lowe’s this weekend but time got away from me so I will have to try again next weekend but I am seeing flowers come up. So excited to get it together so I can sit outside again.

I also got addicted to The Blacklist. I was recording the new season but I needed to start from the beginning and I love it!

I conquered

vanity

After measuring the space and figuring out the measurements I would need for all the pieces I headed to Lowe’s and got the pieces cut. I used the Truss Desk from Shanty2Chic for the basis and adjusted as needed leaving out the cross beam design since it was much smaller in size. For the free design go here. My final measurements was 35″ Wide x 24″ Deep and 28″ Tall. All the wood for this project cost less than $30.00, everything else I needed I had on hand.

When I was moving my yarn to a new basket, Seamus decided he wanted to help. Side Note: I think I need to start knitting again so I can get rid of this yarn, or maybe some yarn wreaths???

Affordable Office Decor Inspiration

If you saw my post from Monday you know that I am updating my office. It started with building a new L shaped desk. It was a hodge podge of styles, hobbies, and items and this time I want to keep the functionality but streamline it. So I am sharing some of my inspiration for the different areas of my new office.

Here is the desk before and after:

office

This will be on the wall opposite the desk and will be a reading nook, with the shelves above for all my books. I am trying to decide between the chaise or the tufted chair. Both choices are under $200.00. Bonus!  Which would you choose?

Book A Day (Instant Download) // No Enjoyment Like Reading (Instant Download) // Tufted Chair

This nook will replace the other table in my office that houses my sewing machine and where I currently do my makeup so I need a new spot for that since I like having it out of my bathroom.

Vacation, Allergies, and Friends

Happy Monday! I wish I could say I am well rested after my long weekend but I am fighting some serious allergies or cold. It hit me hard Friday night and I haven’t shaken it yet. I didn’t let it stop me completely though I did take more naps than planned. I would never turn down a nap though. So what was I up to??

I Did

hiking
Thursday was for hiking and shopping. I had to finish up shopping for my Mom’s gift so I could mail it out. Today is her birthday, Happy Birthday Mom!

I stopped at Whole Foods after my hike, and this was what I came out of the store to, seriously sometimes Whole Foods is worst than Wal-Mart.

One of the places I stopped was Lowe’s for some wood for a new project. Dinner was a salad with some taco seasoned beef. So yum!

Friday morning I started a new book, while drinking my morning java.

Friday afternoon I met up with Maddie from The Whimsy One since she was in town visiting family. We went to Patriots Place and had lunch at Red Robin and followed it up with a cupcake. Of course we had to take a photo in front of the stadium sign.

Gillette

I was starting to feel sick on Friday morning but by the night it got really bad. I think the melting snow just really brought out an allergy/cold. I ended up falling asleep for a few hours and then waking up and going to bed.

Saturday I wanted to get the desk built and stained so I could get it installed on Sunday, in between building and staining I was reading or napping.

desk

I conquered

My office has been re-done twice now. It never seems to work since it is a hodge podge of so many hobbies and many supplies from so many different places. I wanted something a little bit more coordinated and thought out and I really wanted to declutter and organize. I still have some art to put up and a leg to build, but it’s coming along.

I can’t tell you enough how much I love my little munchkin Seamus, he really puts up with me dressing him up and doesn’t complain. Such a doll face, love him!
