The Hole In My Heart

Every book I read leads to the opportunity to open my head and mind. Open itself to possibilities, the emotions of others and to what lies within myself. While I tend to review books during my once a month recap with Steph and Jana I felt that Wild by Cheryl Strayed deserved a separate post because of what it brought out of me. Much like Lance Armstrong’s book It’s Not About The Bike led me to triathlons, I think this book is leading me to more long distance hiking.

12262741

Goodreads: At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State — and she would do it alone.
Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wildpowerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

In the book Cheryl discusses her journey of being lost and then found on the Pacific Crest Trails also known as the PCT. Just four years after her mother’s lost battle with cancer and her short lived romance with a man named Joe, a heroin addict. Cheryl herself admits to doing heroin with him and feeling out of control. She admits to being promiscuous in order to not have to feel. With all this being said she is human, she is flawed and she sets out on the trail in order to find herself again, heal, and grieve her mother.

While I wasn’t impressed with the writing at times, I was expecting a little more storytelling and maybe a little more soul searching but I was deeply impressed with the trek and journey itself. To hike over 1100 miles over the course of 3 months, losing 6 toenails and carrying a backpack she could barely get an inch off the ground. The skin on her hips and shoulders being rubbed raw from the pack, not being able to shower for days on end, encountering all sorts of wildlife including rattlesnakes, and mountain lions is impressive.

I like that she pushed through and persevered, when some of the men cut the trip short. She could have easily have done the same but she pushed forward. She described a hole in her heart that was left from her mother’s death and that feeling is something I can relate to.

Without going into details I have felt similar in the past, maybe because of my childhood or things that happened to me outside of my control that left me feeling lost. I like the idea of challenging myself to push deep and overcome. I am challenging myself to hike as many of the 50 over 4k mountains of New Hampshire since I can’t take 3 months off from work. These are a little more manageable, and I can tackle them on the weekend. Roughly they would take about 4-6 hours each, depending on my speed.

So like I said, books have a way of speaking to you, at where you are in your life. It may not speak to you in the same way but I am an outdoors person and I love a story of perseverance. So in that way I connected with the journey, and that is why I will always be a reader.

Keep reading. It's one of the most marvelous adventures that anyone can have. -Lloyd Alexander

February Books I’ve Read

With the Winter I tend to read a lot more than normal, thanks in part to all the snow storms. I also bit off more than I could chew with a lot of books I got free for reviews, and books that came in from the library all at once. Such is life, this book nerd really doesn’t mind. So hopefully you find a book or two that you may want to read as well.

My rating system:

Five Stars: Blew me away, made me want to stay up till 3am to finish, would read again and again or I didn’t find anything I would want to change.

Four Stars: Really good book, fast paced or thought provoking

Three Stars: Okay, didn’t thrill me but didn’t disappoint me either.

Two Stars: I almost didn’t finish, it may have irritated or offended me in some way.

Five Stars

Five Stars

Hearth Stone – Sydney decides to buy a house on a whim, with the idea that she can fix it up and train Olympic Equestrian hopefuls after her career is ended after an injury. Shortly after buying the house, her funding is cut short and she tries to hide it. A local named Hunter offers her to work in trade, he is amused by her spunk and her obvious desperation. When it all seems to be falling apart Sydney finds a Mustang in dire need for help, twisted in barbed wire and should be put down. Her grit to hold on, and save the horse not only saves the horse but herself as well. Sydney also takes in a woman and her autistic child and others who need saving. The banter of Sydney and Hunter really moves the story along.

Fever – This is the second book of the Breathless Series. For fans of 50 Shades of Grey fans, you will like this series even better.  Jace is the intense silent type who is used to sharing women with his best friend Ash, and when he sees Bethany he knows he wants her. After just one night he feels such jealousy and possession but she leaves before he wakes up. Jace tears up the city to find her, and let her know that he doesn’t want to let her go. While Jace is intense he is also in tune with Bethany’s needs and not as overbearing as some of the other male alphas in other dominant/sub characters and it was refreshing.

four stars

breathless

Rush – This is the first book in the Breathless series and it starts off with a bang. Gabe has been looking out for Mia since she was young, she is the younger sister of his best friend Jace. Problem is she is all grown up and his feeling have merged from brotherly love, to full blazing lust. Gabe has decided enough is enough and he is making his move, can Mia agree to his strict requirements. Can she submit to his tastes and desires? What Gabe doesn’t know is that Mia has been carrying the same torch for Gabe, that he has carried for her, but keeping the relationship from her brother has the chance to pull them apart.

Burn – This is the final book in the Breathless series. Ash was the last of his three friends to pair off. Just getting a peak of a tattoo underneath the shirt of a woman and he is intrigued. She may have told him No, but Ash is used to getting his way. He begins the pursuit to win her over. His intensity would scare a normal girl, but Josie is used to dominant relationships, but she has been disappointed in the past. Ash is willing to convince her that it’s worth taking a chance on him.

four stars

One Wish – While Grace is trying to move on from her old life as a competitive figure skater, she comes into her own while running her own flower shop. A local teacher thrives on being active and adventurous and decides he is the perfect person to shake up Grace’s overworked schedule. A little friends with benefits could be just what they both need. Grace tries really hard to keep her old life buried but sometimes it can’t stay buried. While reading this book I really felt the characters were well developed, I felt for each and were hoping for the happy ending they deserved.

The Girls of Mischief Bay – There is nothing better then the support of your girlfriends. These three friends are going through different struggles with their relationship, and at different phases of life. Nicole feels like a single mother after her husband decides to quit his job in order to become a screenwriter. Shannon is beginning to make her dating life a priority after building her career and being the Vice President at her job. Pam has been married for 30 years and she wants to rejuvenate her marriage. They run the gamut of experience and through it all they lean on each other to get through all of life’s experiences.

Start Me Up – Anne puts together the most Pinterest worthy parties, and blogs about it. Her blog became her life and her main source of income, causing a rift in her marriage causing it to end. During a birthday party, Mike a local mechanic happens upon Anne and is drawn to her. He likes being a mechanic, living above his business and not having any long term attachments, that is until he meets Anne with her perfectly poised outfits and her charm. What I liked about this book is that they date, they don’t rush into bed, and they build their relationship on friendship. I may be a little biased being a blogger.

 three stars

 three stars

Model Behavior – Livvie knows her best friend Ben means business when he drops his cell phone in her drink. The list of 7 tasks in 24 hours has begun. If Ben completes the task then Livvie needs to give them a chance. While it was a cute premise both characters were superficial with “model” good looks. Livvie came from humble beginnings making her very strict on never going back, but her requests came off very surface level and hypocritical.

Hush – This book just screamed crazy dumb girl who runs back into a house when the killer is chasing her. Lake Warren is in a custody battle with her ex, so when she wakes up next to the young hot doctor she just had a one night stand with and he is dead, she doesn’t call the police. It does keep a steady pace, and I didn’t figure out the ending which saves it from being a bust.

Two stars

22926840

Officer Elvis – I am not sure what I was expecting from this book, but it leaned a little bit too much toward the cheesy than the mystery who-done-it I was expecting. The lead detective Darla, Rita and even the FBI agent Uthie had great banter but it wasn’t enough to save this book for me.

Will you add any of these books to your list?

Calm Before The Storm

I can’t really say what this weekend was about, it drifted on by. I thought about doing a number of things but then I remembered all the things to come this month and I really preferred to keep it low key. I was going to head out to Boston to see the movie Wild since it seems to not be playing anywhere but a few places, then decided to let it be for now.

The Introvert in me laughed at even the thought of running around instead of staying in, but it was a weekend of getting my house in order after piles of snow gear circling the front entrance, the salt trails on my hardwood floors, the laundry that never seemed to get done, getting done. It was as it should have been. A sort of reset to energize myself for the Spring ahead.

I Did

I finish the book Wild by Cheryl Strayed and I am already planning my hikes this Spring and Summer in New Hampshire. Wildcat and Owl’s Head might be a few of the first ones, with Mount Washington coming up the rear.

I may have gone to the gas station Redbox in my pajamas, and snow boots. I ended up getting Gone Girl and The Capture Captive, both really good.

weekend

I got my paid receipt from the bank for my car, this made it seem so real. Paid off a year early.

Saturday while watching movies I did a little spa day. With candles lit I soaked my feet, put on a face mask, applied some self-tanner and painted my toes.

I didn’t moan about Daylight Savings time because it gave me an excuse to nap on the couch, which I did.

weekend-1
A little Watermelon Margarita to watch Gone Girl, still as messed up as the book.

Started a new book on Sunday, the Author Joanne DeMaio will be making an appearance on the blog soon to promote her new book The Denim Blue Sea.

With the warmer weather I tried to shovel out the skating rink that is my driveway.

I took a drive with Seamus so he could stick his head out the window and to just jam out with the windows down.

Seamus Sightings

Seamus seems to be spending more and more time on his new bed. I can almost never tear him off it unless it’s time for a walk.

Seamus

Seamus-1

Overall, this weekend was the calm before the storm. Lots of birthdays to attend in the coming weeks, lots of driving back to my hometown and lots of gifts to buy and ship. I was glad to enjoy the peaceful and get my house back in order after this Winter.

How was your weekend?

Stuff and Things – Bringing the Random

It is Wednesday as I am writing this and it has been a rough week so I am bring you a whole bunch of random things.

1. I am currently reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I totally admire people who really test their inner strength. Jack Kerouac’s On The Road is my favorite book so this should be no surprise. I totally am inspired by her journey, and began to ponder if I could do it. Three months of hiking and backpacking, I’m kind of game for it. Though I would have to be debt free and able to put life on hold. Might not be possible. So I might challenge myself to hike 5 mountain over 5k feet this summer instead.

Wild
2. While this week has been hectic, I have had some really great acknowledgements from sales reps, and my boss. Total proud moment to get recognized.

3. Some items I am loving: I think I got this as a Sephora extra or during the VIB sale, I can’t remember but I love it. It is helping with the dry skin on my face this Winter. It is a little pricey at $18.50 for the 0.5 oz size but the 0.16 oz size I got has lasted a few months now and is still 3/4 full. You don’t use a lot.

I believe I got this one from Kathy for Christmas or from an old Ipsy bag. It is so light weight but really adds shine and keeps frizz in check. Again I have had it for months and not even 1/2 gone. It also has a nice light lemongrass scent to it. I have the .5 oz size but Amazon sells the 1 oz size. I will be repurchasing once I am out. Love this product. I use it on wet hair to protect, and on dry hair as a serum. *Not an affiliate link, I just really like it, so sharing.

4. I have 42 e-books downloaded and unread, with 3 books checked out of the library. Can you say anxiety. I want a weeks vacation in a B&B to just read all day and get caught up. I have a follow-up book to Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans by Joanne DeMaio to read and she will be making a Blog Hop Stop on my blog this month to feature her new book. So excited! Read my review of the first book here. So grateful for NetGalley, BookBub, and my library for supporting my habit.

5. Speaking of books, Heather over at My Little HEA is having her 30th birthday today and she is have a $175 paypal cash giveaway to celebrate. Head over and wish her a happy birthday and enter till your heart is content or your pockets are full.

Strawberry Peach Protein Smoothie

Is it just me or is this Winter just never ending. As the Winter gets longer it becomes really tough to eat healthy and stay on track. All of the shoveling gets in the way of some workouts. By the end I feel so beaten down by it and want to hibernate. With Spring on the way though it’s time to get back on track and get the nutrition in order. Soon we will be rocking some maxi dresses and I want to be ready for it.

With that means more veggies and more fruit and a lot less processed food. This smoothie is perfect for any meal or snack, have 12 almonds on the side to make it even more filling.

Strawberry Peach Protein Smoothie

Ingredients: One Handful of Spinach leaves ~ 1/2 cup Greek Yogurt ~ 6-7 strawberries ~ 1 Apple, cubed ~ 7-8 peach slices ~ 1 TBSP Flax Oil ~ 1 cup Water

Directions: Place all items in the blender, with the water being the last item added. Blend until it reaches your desired consistency. Add water if you want to thin it out.

Spring Cleaning Reads

I know it isn’t Spring just yet, I can tell just from the snow we had on Sunday night but I know it is coming. With warmer weather coming I know I don’t want to spend anymore time indoors than I need to so in the next few weekends I am going to be spring cleaning different areas in my house.

I also want to declutter and remove as many items as I can to try to be a little more minimalist. I also have a ton of birthday in March and April, so plenty of shopping and parties to come. So with the last few weeks of Winter I want to get as much done so once Spring comes I am outside enjoying the weather.

I Did

Chipotle

After doing a little more shopping for 2 birthday gifts I was mailing out, I decided to stop into the Chipotle’s that is in our shopping plaza. I am a bad blogger for having never been to Chipotle and I’ve lived so close to one for 5 years. Oops. The lines were way too long but the food was good. Not sure I get the hype though.

Saturday

The morning started as usual, with a cup of coffee and a book. Finished Start Me Up which I will be reviewing soon but totally worth the read.

I left a soda in my car and didn’t realize till I was heading to the Post Office, with -13 degree weather it was frozen.

I went through my cabinets and took out everything. I am donating any mugs or cups I don’t use, or are ordinary. No surprise I am keeping more than I am donating.

I cleaned the rest of the house from the trash, laundry and dishes. Swept and moped every surface on the main level, and dusted all the corners and ceilings.

Sunday
Sunday I started and finished Blackberry Winter. It blew me away, such a good read.

I decide to spend some time pampering myself with a face mask and Neutrogena face gel.

I have been waiting for the new show Secrets and Lies to come on TV so I watched the first half of it, since it was 2 hours long and I needed to head to bed.

Seamus Sightings

Seamus-May-1

overall it was a great weekend or relaxing, and getting a lot of cleaning done. I am looking forward to the warmer weather though.

Mug Addiction In Effect

If you have been reading my blog for any length of time, you know my addiction with mugs. Cute ones, funny ones, inspiring ones, and just plain pretty ones.

When Melissa posted about hosting, I jumped at the chance to join in.  I was partnered with Stacey over at Grace Believer. It was so fun getting to know each other and emailing back and forth.

What I got from Stacey.

I opened the chocolate right away, and it was delicious! I was so excited to get the facial mask, since this Winter has taken a toll on my skin. It left my face feeling so smooth. Thank you Stacey, I loved everything in the box.
