Vacation Mode

Well I am still on vacation for one more day and I left a lot of the items on my list for today so this is just a portion of it. Today is my shopping day so that should be fun. I also need to get my inspection sticker on my car, not as fun.

I Did

weekend

Taking a break on Friday at the hospital with my Dad to read and have lunch.  FInishing the book led to me watching an obscene amount of the The Mindy project episodes.

Made a huge batch of fruit salad to have as breakfast for the week. So good. Also had a side of chorizo and some walnuts.

Saturday I was having my new oven delivered so I dubbed it my not leaving the couch day. So I curled up with a book and relaxed with some coffee. This book is perfect for those who love the Hallmark movie season. It was perfectly adorable. Sure it had some eyeroll moments and things were wrapped up a little too perfectly but it was a town that came together and helped their own including veterans and it pulled my heartstrings.

I had more than a few wood projects I wanted to work on but then I took a nap instead of lugging out my miter saw so this was the only one I got done. I still need to dress it up but it was a fun stocking project.

trial

Sunday was finally the day where I could get outside so I took to the trails for a 4.5 mile. Then I went grocery shopping and relaxed for a little bit. Ok, okay I took a nap. Then did the stocking project.

Seamus Sightings

I am a horrible doggy Mom since I forgot to celebrate turning 10 on Thursday. I usually celebrate on the 15th which was the day I adopted him but I totally forget. Bad Mommy. Either way I totally spoiled him all weekend.

September Books I’ve Read

Happy best day of the month, day! Show Us Your Books is the day when my Goodreads summary jacks up to 130 recommendations, and I add 1 or 2 dozen books to my ever growing pile of TBR books.

I am trying to catch up on all the NetGalley books I got approved for so the coming months I expect to be reading quite a bit. I also figured out you could sort books on your Goodreads lists by page number so I might start with some short books to bring down the list quicker. Anywhozzle, on to what I read last month!!

My rating system:
Five Stars: Blew me away, made me want to stay up till 3am to finish, would read again and again or I didn’t find anything I would want to change.
Four Stars: Really good book, fast paced or thought provoking, but may have dragged a bit or left something unresolved
Three Stars: Okay, didn’t thrill me but didn’t disappoint me either.
Two Stars: I almost didn’t finish, it may have irritated or offended me in some way.
** – Item was received from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I pull no punches though, so you get all my opinions good or bad.
NOTE: I may not care for a book or I may love a book and my reactions are based on my experiences and tastes. Please don’t let my opinions deter you if a book really intrigues you, and know all opinions are my own.

Five Stars

5 stars

Best Laid Plans – Allison Brennan is always one of my go to authors for a good read. I have read this series from the beginning so I feel invested in the characters which helps to feel engrossed in the story. Lucy has been through the imaginable and she is a character who just keeps fighting. She also always fights hard for other victims out there and so we are kindred spirits. Sean is her boyfriend and he lends his computer skills again to help her find the person who killed the Congresswoman’s husband. It is wound in gang war fight, espionage, prostitution and embezzlement so something for everyone. I am looking forward to the next book in this series which will be out in November.

** Tough Love – This is the third book in the Ultimate series and Vanity made a brief appearance in the second book. Vanity made a deal with Stack to accompany her to a wedding in exchange for a night of unattached sex. This worked out well for Stack since he didn’t want to get attached but he is finding it really hard to resist from wanting more from Vanity.
His family demands enough attention from him but when Vanity steps in like she has always known them it leaves him wanting forever. I just love how this group always steps in to help each other and creates their own sense of family with lots or teasing and pushing in the right direction. A little love, sex, annoying family, loser boyfriends, and hot MMA fighters who surround the ones they love and protect them.

four stars

4 stars

A Stolen Life – I knew only roughly what this story was about, and knowing more now after reading it, broke me. I like to live with a sense of naivete that people are good and don’t hurt each other. The exceptions to the rule do spoil that and Jaycee’s kidnapper is that kind of evil. I wanted to yell at her to be bold and to run but then I remember her age and it makes it that much worse. So heartbreaking what she went through but also inspiring that she survived and is helping others with her foundation. The writing was a little repetitive and childish but understandable since she was kidnapped at age 11, and without access to basic education. I can’t imagine have children with your abuser. I hope that she is at peace now.

** Take The Fall – This was a light and fun YA romance. One fateful night after a drag race Seth ended up taking the fall for something he didn’t do along with his best friend Jase leaving his girlfriend Rowan alone. Embarrassed and angry he pushes Rowan away. After a stint in the Marines he comes back for his grandmother’s funeral and determined to win Rowan back. She is a firecracker who doesn’t give in easily though even when she wants to. I read this book in a day, and looking forward to reading the rest in this series. Jase, Rowan’s brother and her best friend Piper, who is a buttoned up upper class woman looking to break free from her oppressive family showed some sparks.

** While You Were Gone – While this was a companion novel to Thought I Knew You I felt like it was a standalone book. Karen is in a place in her life where everything seems bleak. Dealing with her alcoholic mother in the middle of the night leads to her being less than stellar for her audition for the position at the orchestra she has been waiting for her whole career. The day isn’t over yet until her boyfriend decides he doesn’t want her anymore and is seeing someone else. Drowning her sorrows and meeting a man she clicks with was not the plan, getting in an accident wasn’t either but he stays by her side. She becomes giddy and attached to his energy and how they are together. One night brought them together but one night can bring it all tumbling down. Karen will have to decide which road to go. A short and quick read that made me wanting more from this author.

4 stars-1

The Forgotten Girls – I am not sure what I was expecting from the book but it totally was not what I imagined. It reminded me of Real Housewives of the OC, mixed with a Wes Craven horror movie. The elite town of Greenvale has an addiction problem with Adderall and the competitiveness of college admissions. Bella is a top detective and she has been paired with Mack who has been sidelined for his own addictions but is now getting a second chance, to find out why girls are dying in that town. The connection to a now defunct psych institution brings a horrific twist into the motives of a psychopath. I am glad this was the first in the series and looking forward to the next in the series.

** A Million Miles Away – Peter is the boyfriend of Michelle, Kelsey’s twin sister and when she dies in an accident Peter is already overseas in Afghanistan serving in the military. Kelsey in her grief can’t bare to tell him about her death. Instead she strikes up a relationship with him that changes her world. I felt a visceral pain in the telling of the story and while some of Kelsey’s choices were selfish they were at times to protect others, and at times to protect herself. I really enjoyed seeing Kelsey grow and find herself.

 three stars

3 stars

** Trust No One –  I really struggled with this book. The beginning was really good and I really like the premise of a crime author who develops Alzheimer and starts to doubt whether his novel was based on memory or just his imagination. Each time he escapes from his nursing home a new woman is found dead. The ending really picked up but I was able to guess some of it, which was a little disappointing. I started to just want it to be over which is why I could only give it three stars.

The Wrong Man –  I listened to this as an audiobook and I feel like i would have liked it more had I read it. I lost some of the storyline and some of the pace of the story. Kit ends up having a one night stand with a guy she meets on vacation. He happens to live in her city and once she returns he ends up wanting to reconnect, the problem is when she shows up to his apartment it isn’t the same man, and just a short while later he ends up dead. She is followed and her life is turned upside down, and the only way to get her life back is to find the man from her vacation.

**The Escape – The sheriff’s daughter Avery comes upon a boy from school covered in blood, she was a part of the search party to find the two boys who went missing after a hike in the woods. Fletcher, was beaten and covered in blood. He is visibly shaken and scared. His friend Adam is found dead just a day later. The mystery of finding out who did it, makes it tough when Fletcher can only remember snippets from his days in the woods. Avery is determined to help Fletcher remember what happened. I would have given this 4 stars but the end was a little predictable.

** The Good Neighbor –  In a quiet cul-de-sac nothing is as is seems. Sarah is woken in the middle of the night and her life is never the same again. Amid her new life she realizes her friends held secrets big enough to destroy her, the girl across the street was a thief, and even her husband just might not be what he seems. The ending left a few questions which bothered me a bit but otherwise it was a quick read, and kept me engaged.

Two stars

22891496

** Break Your Heart – This was an average teacher student romance. It was college aged so I figured I would be okay with this story line. Consenting adults making a choice, so long as the teacher didn’t abuse his power right? Wrong. The whole brooding, clandestine meetings, and such just made me lose interest. The teacher’s character was so underdeveloped I didn’t get a sense of him or his motives. It could have been so much better with some depth.

What Just Happened?

Seriously I have no idea what happened this weekend. I had good intentions of just relaxing and reading since it’s been so hectic at work but then I got it into my head to do a big project. Yeah I know I am an idiot.

The project seemed to be more so the universe laughing at me because it was a comedy of errors. Beginning with the rain that came when I tried to pick up my new Miter saw and load the wood, I got soaked. Then I realized when I went to start the project the guy gave me the wrong wood, it should have been 3/4″ and he gave me 1/4″ which wouldn’t support the shelves. Three trips to Lowe’s later and the project still isn’t done. Womp womp.

Luckily I have a four day weekend coming up and can just relax.

I Did

My lunch was a bit of laziness but either way it was delicious!

Project somewhat done before I gave up for the weekend.

My oven also wouldn’t hear up so in one of my Lowe’s trips I have to purchase a new oven. I’ll have to wait a week to make bacon. First world problems, I know!

Decided that some hot chocolate and my last book for the Challenge by Erin was in order.

The Energy of Fall – Bucket List

The season of Fall always brings me so much energy. It seems the summer zaps all my energy but with the cooler temps I finally feel like I can do all the things!!

I have more than a few I want to complete and hopefully the weather stays warm enough that I can work outside. Some are more ambitious than others so I might not get them all done but half the fun is in trying. Right?

I also plan to spend a few weekends whipping up some new recipes and a few of these are giving me some ideas.

Building Something

Monday is here and I am not going to be sad about it. The weekend was crazy and as much as I would have loved to just sit on the couch all weekend, snuggled in blankets and books I really wanted to check in with my Dad who has been having some health issues. I also dropped off a book I got him last weekend at the used book store. Overall it was a good weekend.

I Did

Since I was in the same town I popped over to my brother’s house to see the nieces. It is always tough when I have Seamus but he was good for the most part. He is not good with sudden movements and with kids that is a given.

Friday was a relaxing night in with a little Sparkletini I picked up at the new World Market while reading.

I started the Coincidence of Coconut Cake, it is promoted as a cross between You’ve Got Mail meets How to Eat a Cupcake, and I would agree.

Saturday was also a good mail day. I got my package in from Ulta and NYX was buy 2 get one Free so I made good use of the discount.

After getting home from my brothers I dropped off Seamus and went grocery shopping and by then it was 8pm so it was a quiet night with some DVR shows and crackling candles.

saturday

Sunday was busy and I wanted to finally make this Rustic Bacon Apple Chicken that I saw on Chelsea’s post a week ago. It was delish and it really inspired me to start creating some of my own recipes again.

I conquered

I thought I wouldn’t have time for a big project so I decided to do some smaller ones I wanted to do, yeah it still took a lot of time but totally worth since I love both of them. I can’t decide if I want to put little baby’s breath wreaths on the stars or stencil on FALL or just leave as they are now. This will find a more permanent home soon, once I finish another project. Ha! I used the Early American wood stain by MinWax.

stars

This project is only half done. After attaching all the board together I stained it with Rust-Oleum in Carrington. I already had the anchor stencil from a project I did last year and I used a sample paint in off-white, to stamp it on. I plan to add the words “Find What Anchors You…” to it mostly likely next weekend.

Friday Favorites | Woodsy Fall

Happy Friday! I had yesterday off from work so I could get my treadmill fixed, thankfully it was just a tune-up because he warned me if it was a belt it could cost $400.00. Hells to the no! I am so excited to get to run again at home.

I also decided to go to the clinic because I woke up and my cough was worse and I could barely talk since get my flu shot last Friday. I also hit up the World Market that finally opened up in my town and I got two more xmas presents and adding a skull and cross bones cookie stamp, and some white ceramic teaspoons for myself. Then I slept and read the day away.

We are supposed to get a major Hurricane here so not sure if I will get to build anything but I will try, and hopefully pop down to visit with my Dad. Anyhoo, on to this week’s favorites.

A Little White Lie

There are parts of me that I don’t share online, but those who know me in real life might know that I am an old soul and I can be very sensitive. I tend to be a little too empathetic at times, it shows every time a Sarah McLachlan SPCA commercial comes on.  Water works!

I cry during the Voice auditions when they tell their story and a chair turns letting them live their dream, and I cry every time the National Anthem is played knowing that my Dad fought for those freedoms.

There are many books I have read that have touched me deeply. Just to name a few: On The Road and Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac, All The Bright Places by Jennifer Nevin,  The Life Intended by Kristin Harmel, and Before I Go by Colleen Oakley.  They all touched me for different reasons but they touched me, made me feel, broke me down.

Jack Kerouac – Naval Reserve Enlistment Photo

There are movies that have done the same. A few examples: In God’s Hands, Without Limits, Powder, and The Family Stone. C’Mon did you really think I would leave out the Family Stone?!

Some made me want to find my truth, some made me believe I could do anything I wanted to do with a little perseverance and what it looks like to be on the outside looking in.

I recently saw the movie The Good Lie starring Reese Witherspoon, about Sudan refugees who get asylum and move to America, their journey and how they change each other was touching. What they went through at such a young age, and the ignorance to things we take for granted like pizza and running water made my emotions jump all over the place.

There is a point where one of the refugees is in class and they discuss Huckleberry Finn and the Good Lie, the title of the film. I am paraphrasing here but he says:

“Huck changes, he tells the slave hunters he has no slaves, so his lie is a credible lie, but it is an unselfish lie because it saves Jim. Jim’s freedom means more than the money he would get for turning him in, so it is a good lie.”

The selflessness shown in that decision and throughout the movie was what I always hope to be. I know I struggle at times being selfish just like everyone but I hope when it matters that I can be selfless.

So to lighten up this post I am going to give you 3 truths and 1 lie, see if you can spot the lie.

  1. My front tooth was chipped and is now a fake.
  2.  I once went to the hospital after falling running up the down escalator in Washington D.C.
  3.  I won a little over $2,500 playing Blackjack at Foxwoods casino on my 21st birthday.
  4.  I was kicked out of Kindergarten for kicking the Principal in the crotch.

What is a lie you have told?

Do you have a favorite movie or book that just made you feel all the feels?

Namastay in Bed

I had big plans for this weekend. Okay not really but I didn’t plan to stay on the couch for 90% of the weekend either. After getting my flu shot on Friday during work I went to bed with my throat hurting. I had a ton of places I wanted to hit so I tried to head out and get it all done before noon so I could relax the rest of the night.

I Did

Saturday I hit the next town over to go to their used bookstore, Bearly Read Books. They had a good mix of classics, history, regional and fiction books. I picked up a book for my Dad and even a Christmas present for someone.

books
Since there was a TJ Maxx just down the road I wanted to go there too. There is one in my town but I had no luck in the stores in my town looking for a mirror for my entryway. I filled my cart up with some more gifts too.

After hitting the grocery store I headed home and took a nap. Reading, cough medicine and another nap rounded out the night.

Sunday was all about resting, in between chores around the house I read and caught up on my DVR.

books-1
The Good Neighbor was decent though it dragged in places and the ending bugged me a little in that it left questions. Break Your Heart was everything wrong with teacher/student fantasies. They tried to wrap it up in love, but it failed.

I conquered

I wanted to build a new entry console table but such is life. I did find the energy though to hang the new mirror I found and at least change up the wall art.
